2009 Viña Tondonia Rioja Reserva, Lopez de Heredia, Rioja, Spain

Cult Wine

A traditionalist icon from Rioja. the Viña Tondonia Rioja Reserva from Lopez de Heredia is one of the silkiest wines in the world thanks to its six years in 140 year old casks and further bottle aging. Awarded an amazing 97 points this has to be one of the wine world's best value wines.

Sweet berries, cherries, cedar and dried flowers on the nose. Some lemon and lime zest, too! Medium-to full-bodied with tight, integrated tannins that show wonderful length and reserve. So fresh and vivid. Lots of energy. A wonderful, classic wine. Drink or hold. 97 Points. James Suckling

As with many wines this time, I had two vintages to taste of the Reserva from the Tondonia vineyard, 2009 and 2008, two very different, almost opposite vintages. The 2009 Viña Tondonia Reserva, a blend of 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacho and 5% each Mazuelo and Graciano, matured in used American oak barrels for six years. It has some toasted character, with ripe fruit, black rather than red, denoting a warm year but more restrained than the Bosconia Reserva from the same vintage. 2009 is a year of ripeness, concentration and tannin; the wines are powerful, but here you see the finesse of Tondonia in comparison to the more rustic Viña Bosconia. 220,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2017. 93 Points. Wine Advocate

This iconic Rioja Reserva will pair well with all meat dishes however prepared. A perfect partner for lamb, however it is prepared and meaty stews.

Considered an excellent vintage by the Wine Advocate and Wine Spectator and certainly the best of the last five vintages. 2009 was a hot, dry season with lots of excellent ripe fruit.

Made from a blend of Tempranillo (75%), Garnacho (15%), Graciano and Mazuelo (10%) the wine is matured for six years and racked twice, aged in 140 year old casks plus further bottle ageing.

The beating heart of Rioja, Lopez de Heredia is, for many, the most important winery in the region, with a rich, long history and a central focal point for local tours.

A traditional Rioja producer nothing much has changed here in a century. Lopez de Heredia have always been proponents of lutte raisonée so have never marketed themselves as organic or natural winemakers. Incredible care, time and attention is spent in both their 170 hectare vineyards and cathedral like winery to produce wines of style and place.
