OVERVIEW

A star of the tricky 2018 vintage, this Nerello Mascalese manages to combine finesse on a great structure that will actually improve with a bit of bottle age. Full of red fruit, minerality and verve, great acidity and bursting with red fruit, this is a foodie wine that will pair well with so many dishes from hamburgers to roulade!

Nerello Mascalese is an indigenous highly regarded grape in Sicily, dark-skinned, that grows on the volcanic soils of Mount Etna in Sicily.

CRITIC REVIEWS (2019)

A sophisticated Etna red with the bright red-fruit and orange-zest aromas that make this appellation stand out in the Sicilian context. Elegant balance of fine tannins and fruit on the medium-bodied palate that shunts up the energy level when the mineral acidity kicks in at the finish. Drink or hold. 93 Points. James Suckling

FOOD PAIRING INSPIRATION

A foodie wine that's going to be a match for so many meat dishes as well as more meaty vegetables like aubergine. Ideal for antipasti too.

VINTAGE AND WINEMAKING

Manual harvesting into crates with careful selection of the grapes in the vineyard. Selection on a vibrating table, followed by grape selection thanks to a latest generation destemmer. Fermentation in stainless steel with maceration on the skins for 8-10 days at a temperature of 25 °C. Aging partly in tanks and partly in French oak (second and third passage barriques) for 14 months and then at least 7 months in bottle before release. PRODUCER NOTES

The highly memorable labels of Donnafugata match well to the company ethos and unique craftsmanship that go into each and every one of these wines. Benefitting from the explosion of interest in Sicily in the early '00s, along with Planeta and Banfi, Donnafugata have gone from strength to strength internationally where their labels are highly sought after for the wine in bottle as well as the Instagram opportunity!

With vineyards across Sicily, Donnafugata offer a great barometers to the quality of any vintage for the entire island.

Sustainability is a policy followed very seriously at Donnafugata wines. Minimising the use of chemical fertilisers, cluster thinning techniques and maximising the use of natural resources are some steps that the team makes in this aspect.

Donnafugata wines are created with the grapes sourced from regions such as Contessa Entellina, Pantelleria, Vittoria, Etna and Marsala. Close to 283 hectares are used for cultivating the vines. The diverse climatic conditions, soil quality and the terroirs of these places make them ideal for growing certain indigenous varietals such as Ansonica, Grecanico, Nero d’Avola, Grillo and Catarratto.
