2021 Morgon Cote du Py V.V, Domaine Jean Foillard, Beaujolais, France
OVERVIEW
Few wines define a region like Jean Foillard's Vieilles Vignes Côte du Py. Regarded as the best wine in the entire AOC of Morgon, year in, year out Foillard's top Morgon takes the critic's awards and the 2019 vintage is no different.
The Vieilles Vignes manages to be both generous and expressive in its youth whilst evolving with grace and charm over the following decades to give pleasure year after year. A 'case buy' wine if ever there were one and a fabulously priced 95 pointer.
CRITIC REVIEWS
An intensely mineral expression of Beaujolais that makes a good argument for this region, matching the (well known) terroir expression of Burgundy. As pure and focused as it is concentrated with a very long finish that’s all wet stones. Great aging potential! Drink or hold. 95 Points. James Suckling (July 2022)
The most reserved wine in the range is the 2019 Morgon Côte du Py, a terrific effort that unwinds in the glass with notes of sweet berry fruit, peonies, loamy soil and sweet spices. Medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with ultra-fine tannins and lively acids, it's sapid and mouth-watering. Stylistically, this sits somewhere between the richer, riper register of 2018 and 2017 and the fragrant classicism of 2016. As ever, it's one of the most dependably delicious purchases to be made in the region. 94 Points. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (May 2022)
FOOD PAIRING INSPIRATION
This amazing cru Beaujolais will be a fine accompaniment to the best local charcuterie and will stand up to roast meats, game and stews too despite being made from a traditionally lighter grape.
VINTAGE AND WINEMAKING
2019 was a real mixed bag in Beaujolais whereas overall it was one of the sunniest on record it was also one of the trickiest with lots of extremes including rain and cold. However, great producers managed, thanks to the heat and sunlight, to produce some stunning wines and Foillard's Cote du Py VV Morgon is regarded as the wine of the vintage in Beaujolais by the wine press.
PRODUCER NOTES
Jean Foillard's estate is mostly centred around Beaujolais and Morgon's most famous vineyard the Côte du Py, the legendary slope outside the town of Villié-Morgon and the pride of cru Morgon. These slopes are composed of schist and granite soils and sit on an alluvial fan at the highest point above the town and impart great complexity. The drainage, exposure and soil composition are second to none in the local area. However, terroir alone does not make award winning wines.
Jean Foillard has long been a student of the great Jules Chauvet, a traditionalist who defied everything that the more commercial brands were touting in the region. Jean's wines are dense, supple and generous when young but mature beautifully, gathering complexity and tertiary aromas as they go. If any wine in Beaujolais deserves a case buy to enjoy its evolution, it is this wine.
