2018 Pinot Gris Rotenberg, Zind Humbrecht, Alsace, France

Somm Picks

OVERVIEW

The instantly recognisable label of Zind Humbrecht, one of France's most famous producers, is a hallmark of quality for all the noble grapes including Pinot Gris from the Rotenberg vineyard.

This is a foodie wine that will pair well with a variety of dishes including most fish and rice dishes. The aromas are sensational, complex and bright and full of white peach and quince. The wine is concentrated and long and will evolve over the years producing interesting tertiary characteristics.

CRITIC REVIEWS

Restrained zestiness and a sense of russet-pear peel is all the shy nose gives away for now. The palate of this wine comes in with freshness supported by the liveliness of some residual carbon dioxide, and a richer, almost buttery notion of pear fruit. Vivacity has the upper hand, especially on the sprightly finish that tapers from the rounded fruit. 94 Points. Wine Enthusiast

FOOD PAIRING INSPIRATION

This Pinot Gris is exceptionally dry and will pair well with a range of fish dishes including salmon, halibut, monkfish and swordfish as well as a range of lighter risotto dishes such as mushroom or prosciutto & green pea.

VINTAGE AND WINEMAKING

The Pinot Gris grapes in the Zind Humbrecht 2018 vintage were the best of all the noble varieties that year. They were healthy, kept a beautiful acidity and despite a relatively low pH for this grape, the fermentation went on to the end. All the Pinot Gris wines at Zind Humbrecht are kept on their lees for 18 months before bottling.

The soil structure in the Rotenberf vineyard is made up from the substratum of Oligocene limestone and tertiary marl. The steep slopes of up to 40% gradient result in a very thin layer of topsoil and shallow limestone bedrock. The soil here is extremely rich in iron which gives it an intense, spectacular brick-red colour, hence the name, Rotenberg meaning 'red hill'.

PRODUCER NOTES

A winemaking family since the 1620s, the domaine Zind Humbrecht was not officially founded until 1959 and today owns 40ha of vines in the Grand Crus of Rangen de Thann (5.5ha), Goldert in Gueberschwihr (0.9ha), Hengst in Wintzenheim (1.4ha) and Brand in Turckheim (2.4ha); as well as the terroirs of Rotenberg (1.8ha) and Clos Häuserer (1.2ha) in Wintzenheim; Herrenweg (11.5ha), Clos Jebsal (1.3ha) and Heimbourg (4ha) in Turckheim and the Clos Windsbuhl (5.15ha) in Hunawihr.

Everything at Zind Humbrect is about exacting standards and taking the finest fruit and the correct length of time to tease out the finest expression from all the noble varities. There is a high ratio of staff at Zind Humbrect to carry out the biodynamic and organic principles that go into their winemaking with most viticultrual tasks carried out manually and with the aid of horses in the vineyard too.

The result of this time, care and attention is perfectly ripe fruit meeting exemplary, vinification techniques with the resulting output some of the finest wines produced anywhere in the world.
