2021 Sito Moresco Rosso Langhe, Gaja, Piedmont, Italy

Cult Wine

OVERVIEW

The Sito Moresco was created a softer and earlier drinking 'taste of the Langhe' and contains 50% Nebbiolo and 50% Barbera.

An 'entry level' wine from Italian master, Angelo Gaja, the Sito Moresco is approachable young but will also improve over the coming decade. From the near perfect, textbook, 2020 vintage, the grapes from the Barbaresco region, this is one of the best Sito Morescos in modern history.

CRITIC REVIEWS

Mid cherry with soft pink rim. Pure red and dark-red fruits on the nose. Charming and intense, lightly spiced. Delicate floral note too. A wine to spend time with. Taut, juicy and relatively light on the palate. Ready now but no rush. Firm, dry yet harmonious finish. (JH) - 17/20

FOOD PAIRING INSPIRATION

The high tannin and acid of the Nebbiolo is softened by the Barbera and even more by the Merlot making this wine great for grilled red meats and hard cheese.

VINTAGE AND WINEMAKING

The year 2020 brought its fair share of challenges, and the world of winemaking in Piedmont was no exception. With the global pandemic affecting every facet of daily life, vintners had to adapt quickly to new safety measures, social distancing, and changing economic conditions. Despite these challenges, the Piedmont winemakers displayed resilience, innovation, and dedication, ultimately resulting in a vintage that exceeded all expectations.

One of the critical factors contributing to the exceptional 2020 vintage was the weather. Piedmont experienced near-ideal conditions for grape cultivation. A mild winter and a warm, dry spring allowed for an early bud break and the development of healthy, vibrant vineyards. Adequate rainfall in the early summer ensured that the vines received the necessary hydration, while the hot, sunny days of late summer and early autumn allowed for optimal ripening of the grapes. These meteorological blessings translated into fantastic fruit quality at harvest time.

The three varieties ferment and macerate separately for three weeks. After the malolactic fermentation, the varieties are blended and then aged in oak for 12 months.
