2020 Meursault Les Clousots, Domaine Patrick Javillier, Burgundy, France

Somm Picks

OVERVIEW

Perhaps the best vintage from Meursault in recent memory, the Les Clousots from Domaine Patrick Javillier had its earliest ever harvest in 2020 thanks to the exceptional growing season. Weightier and fleshier than prior vintages though still chiselled Vs oak aged Meursault, the lack of oak in this Meursault allows the wine to simply speak to the quality of the fruit. Delicious now and will evolve over the coming years to its fullest expression.

CRITIC REVIEWS

Bottled late November. Mid lemon colour, apples and quince on the nose. A good intensity of white fruit on the palate with a little citrus to finish, Clean, clear cut, chiselled and long. Just needs the bouquet to emerge. 91 Points. Jasper Morris (Dec 2021)

FOOD PAIRING INSPIRATION

This 91 point Chardonnay from Meursault is made for dishes with textured seafood like a lobster thermidor or prawn dish. Mushroom based sauces and dishes also pair very well with a Meursault.

VINTAGE AND WINEMAKING

Lauded as an exceptional vintage for whites by local MW Jasper Morris, the white harvest was one of the earliest harvests in living memory. The whites offer an incredible purity of fruit, freshness and a clear ability to evolve over the longer term. The harvest on 22nd August was the earliest in the history of the domaine.

Les Clousots is a blend of two lieux-dits: Les Clous near the top of the village and Les Crotots next to 1er Cru Les Poruzots. This coming together of two fabulous parcels is represented also in the name which is literally a mash up of these two lieux-dits.

PRODUCER NOTES

Marion Javillier and brother-in-law Pierre-Emmanuel Lamy now run Domaine Patrick Javillier and they continue to be one of Meursault’s best growers. In all their wines, including this one, idividual plots are vinified separately before extended ageing on fine lees for an extra layer of complexity.

Famous as the toast of Meursault, the Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is the most famous wine in the set followed by the Tête de Murger, a wine also from the blend of two exceptional parcels.
