2018 Il Favot Nebbiolo Langhe, Aldo Conterno, Piedmont, Italy

Somm Picks

For many top producers in the Langhe, their Nebbiolo Langhe bottlings are a chance to show a softer, more approachable style of baby Barolo. However, some of these wines have become icons in their own right and Conterno's Il Favot is perhaps the most outstanding of them all.

The Il Favot 2018 will benefit from 3 hours plus in the decanter but will reward the patient with a full bodied hit of Nebbiolo including classic notes like rose, tar and Turkish Delight.

Fruity and creamy red with walnut and dark-chocolate aromas and flavors. Just a hint of coffee bean. It’s full and flavorful. Like a baby Barolo. Needs time to soften. Better after 2021. 93 Points. James Suckling

A bold wine with structure, this Nebbiolo will pair well with red meat dishes, stews, casseroles, hearty risottos and mushroom dishes.

2018 looked like it was heading to a washout until a very warm summer from 2018 ripened the grapes to perfection. 2018 is a Nebbiolo vintage at the peak of finesse and charm. The wines of Conterno in this vintage strike a balance of perfume, precision and power, with silky tannins.

The grapes used to make “ Il Favot” come from vineyards which have undergone periodical implantations, and so have a maximum age of 15 years. The skin contact is limited to 6-8 days so to extract few tannins and more colour from the skins themselves, with the result of getting a well-coloured wine with a remarkable softness.

The history of this winemaking family dates to at least 1770. The Poderi Aldo Conterno is located in Monforte d'Alba. Brothers Aldo and Giovanni Conterno continued to work the family's vineyards until 1969, when they agreed to split their holdings and Aldo bought Il Favot after a brief stint in Napa learning from the Californians.

Aldo took on their vines in the Bussia area, and with it, the freedom to produce wines in his own style, greatly influenced by near neighbour Angelo Gaja and his modern winemaking techniques. His three grown sons Stefano, Franco and Giacomo carry on the tradition after Aldo passed away in 2012.
