2021 Dolcetto d'Alba, G.D. Vajra, Piedmont, Italy

Somm Picks

An aromatic, pure and driven Dolcetto masterclass from G.D Vajra from another high altitude vineyard. This wine offers plenty of spicy red fruit and hallmark freshness of this producer.

A food lovers dream wine with no oak influence, this wine is about the most focused expression of the Dolcetto grape on the market, great for WSET students looking for typicity and wine lovers looking for deliciousness!

The 2020 Dolcetto d’Alba is absolutely gorgeous. Bright red berry fruit, spice and floral accents all grace this energetic, vibrant, mid-weight Dolcetto. The Vajra Dolcetto is done entirely in steel. It is as classic as it gets. There’s lovely freshness here. 90 Points. Antonio Galloni

A simple homemade pizza or tomato based pasta dish is the perfect accompaniment to this Dolcetto.

The 2021 vintage was a mixed vintage with low yields for many grape types in the Piedmont but the Dolcetto was picked fairly early compared to the Nebbiolo.

The Dolcetto harvest typically occurs in the first half of September. The grapes are collected manually. Fermentation lasts 7-15 days depending on the vintage. Bottling in the spring following the harvest, with the Easter moon.

A pioneer in Barolo and the Piedmont through his lifetime, Aldo Vajra founded his estate in the 1970s and throughout this time has advocated wines from high altitude vineyards and developed wines from indigenousness grapes (like the amazing Freisa that Vajra have made their own) and brought grapes into the region to flourish like the Rhine Riesling.

The family still continue to innovate with research into soils and climate changes whilst managing to produce exceptional wines of power and finesse in every vintage.
