CRITIC REVIEWS (PRIOR VINTAGE)

This is so, so, so Grenache! If I were to sit someone down and teach them about the Grenache grape, this is the wine I would put in front of them. Not because it’s textbook, or benchmark (it’s both), but because it is beautiful, beautiful Grenache. This shines a glorious light on just how gorgeous this variety can be. If I could describe this wine in metaphor, it would be Harley Davidson; tight motorbike leathers; wind in your face; Bonnie Tyler belting out ‘Holding out for a hero’; curled up on a couch watching an epic movie; home-made strawberry jam on toast. NB I carried on tasting this wine for two weeks after I opened it. It got more and more delicious. Worth every penny . 17/20 Points Jancisrobinson.com

FOOD PAIRING INSPIRATION

A wine that should be served slightly chilled, we think a Mozzarella and Tomato salad would pair very nicely.

VINTAGE AND WINEMAKING

An almost totally dry growing season followed by rain finally in September the vintage was saved by the final downpours that allowed the grapes to swell. Domaine of the Bee believe this was a great year for their reds.

Hand harvested Grenache grapes that are also sorted at the winery. The grapes are emptied into upturned demi-muids (500L barrels) with the ends taken out. The barrels picked after the rain were 'bled' to remove a small amount of juice, which was amalgamated to create two barrels of a very pale red. Some of Jean-Marc's Grenache was fermented with 'whole bunches', and the rest were destemmed. Jean-Marc's Grenache was blended with the two barrels of the domaine's 'pale red' and a barrel of saignée rosé to produce this year's Bee-side.

PRODUCER NOTES

Founded in 2003 by three friends with a passion for wine, Domaine of the Bee is, amazingly, a side project for an MW (Justin Howard-Sneyd), his wife (Amanda Howard-Sneyd) and their accountant friend; Philippe Sacerdot. This trio manage to run a successful and iconic Languedoc winery whilst maintaining high flying city jobs in London. Truly living the dream then!

The vineyards are located close to Maury, home to the fortified vin doux naturel wines of the area. The area benefits from ancient vines of which Domaine of the Bee have three plots, one in La Coume de Roy planted with Grenache noir and Carignan with 100 year old vines. Another in Bac de Genievres with 100% Grenache Noir from 60 year old vines and La Roque, 100% Carignan from 80 year old vines.
