2015 Château Beau-Séjour Bécot, St Emilion, Bordeaux, France
OVERVIEW
The romance of Château Beau-Séjour Bécot could not escape even the most hard-hearted oenophile. A producer whose tumultuous fortunes with the classification system of St Emilion are well known, but whose beautiful terroir and exquisite wines are undeniable. A critics and wine lover's favourite, there's something romantic and special about opening a bottle of Beau-Séjour Bécot.
CRITIC REVIEWS
The 2015 Beau-Sejour Becot is composed of 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in 85% new and 15% one-year-old French oak for 17 months. Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the nose opens with blackberries, black cherries and crushed black plums with touches of spice box, lavender and cedar. Medium to full-bodied, it's rich, velvety and decadent in the mouth with a firm backbone and long, spicy finish. Yum! 2022 - 2042 95 Points. Wine Advocate
Very perfumed with crushed berries and blackberries. Wet earth and great intensity. Decadent. Full-bodied, layered and very velvety and intense. Extremely long and intense. A sexy and opulent wine yet poised and tight. One of best ever. Needs at least three to five years bottle age. 95 Points. James Suckling
The 2015 Beau- Séjour-Bécot is a sensational powerhouse of a Saint-Emilion that does everything right. Mostly Merlot, with 20% Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, it’s a ripe, voluptuous effort loaded with notions of cassis, ripe plum, and black cherry fruit intermixed with incense, spring flowers, and damp earth. It has enough tannin to warrant short-term cellaring, but it’s still undeniably delicious today. It will drink nicely for two decades. This cuvee comes from 19.5-hectare vineyard sitting on the upper, limestone dominated plateau, from vines averaging 40 years in age, was harvest between October 5th to the 9th and was aged 17 months in 85% new French oak. 2018 - 2038. 94 Points. FOOD PAIRING INSPIRATION
One of our very favourite St Emilion wines, we can't imagine enjoying it with anything other than a rare Entrecôte à la Bordelaise! C'est magnifique!
VINTAGE AND WINEMAKING
Rated as an outstanding vintage. The dry, mild spring weather encouraged an earlier than usual budburst. The wines of 2015 in Bordeaux are considered some of the most exceptional of the decade.
The 2015 vintage is comprised of 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon and was matured for 17 months in 85% new French oak,
PRODUCER NOTES
An active, working vineyard since the Middle Ages, the vines passed from the monks to the Geres family in the 17th century. By marriage it then passed to the owner of Figeac who renamed the property Beauséjour. In 1969 the name was changed to its current incarnation on the purchase of Michel Bécot who modernised the winery and turned its fortunes around. His family still run the estate.
The recent history of Bécot is yet more exciting with the Chateau being promoted, demoted and then promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé B over the space of a few decades. Today it remains a Premier Grand Cru Classé B. The style of the wine has also changed over the last 30 years entering a 'Parker' phase in the early 2000s and becoming softer and more modern over the past decade. Thomas Duclos consults here, having taken over from Michel Rolland.

SERVICE AND STORAGE TIPS
The wine should be stored over the longer term at 12c. We recommend this wine be brought up to around 16c for service. This temperature more closely resembles cellar conditions and allows the wine to be lifted and have freshness. For such a young wine, if it were served today we would recommend a few hours in a young wine decanter.
