2013 Barolo Carobric, Paolo Scavino, Piedmont, Italy

Cult Wine

Grab a Carobric whilst you can. This Scavino label ended with the 2018 vintage as the lease on the Cannubi vineyard (a part of the Carobric blend) has expired marking the final vintage for this wonderful, three vineyard blend, the 2018.

The 2013 though is a wine from a remarkable Italian vintage that is just entering its drinking window. Intensely pronounced and bursting with cherries and marzipan, the Carobric is an enthralling hit of Nebbiolo at its very best.

Very fresh and creamy on the nose. The palate is full of strawberries and fresh roses. Medium to full body and ultra-fine tannins that are integrated and polished. Lightly chewy on the finish. Give it three to four years to soften. 95 Points. James Suckling

A high-pitched, aromatic Barolo, sporting floral, spice and berry flavors, backed by a solid line of tannins. Tobacco and mineral accents show on the finish. 94 Points. Wine Spectator

Intensely fragrant, this opens with stunning aromas of iris, violet, perfumed berry and a whiff of botanical herb. Linear and refined, the focused palate offers red cherry, strawberry, white pepper and a hint of star anise framed in taut refined tannins and bright acidity. It shows great tension and energy. Drink 2023–2035. 93 Points. Wine Enthusiast

A bold wine with structure, this Barolo will pair well with big meat dishes like steak, veal, osso buco, venison and any beef or game dish.

2013 was a superb Italian vintage for both Barolo and Brunello with both freshness and structure in bounds. In the Piedmont, the vintage started off cool and wet and carried on in that direction until June when the weather turned hot. The copious amounts of rainwater from the winter and spring proved very handy to ensure the vines did not suffer extreme stress. Good yields and high quality grapes.

100% Nebbiolo grapes taken from three parcels within the Scavino vineyards,  Rocche di Castiglione, Cannubi and Bric dël Fiasc.

The winery was founded in the Castiglione Falletto in 1921 by Lorenzo and Paolo Scavino. Today the estate is run by grandson, Enrico and his two daughters Enrica and Elisa. The Scavino vineyards are envied by Barolo families throughout the region with plots in Castiglione Falletto, Barolo, La Morra, Novello, Serralunga d’Alba, Verduno, Roddi and Monforte d’Alba.
