NV 40 Year Old Tawny, Quinta do Noval, Port, Portugal
OVERVIEW
Noval's 40 Year Old Tawny Port represents the ultimate expression of the history of the last 40 years at Quinta do Noval. This port benefits from remarkable smoothness and concentration thanks to its slow evaporation over 40 years in contact with the oak. The aromatic range has developed enormously and the wine is alive with freshness and tertiary characteristics. A truly remarkable wine.
CRITIC REVIEWS
100% estate grapes, mainly Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Francesa and Tinta Barroca. RS 130 g/l, pH 3.53.
More brown and less pink. Lovely raisin and spice and terrific tang. Silky. So zesty and fresh and full of life. More caramel and nuts and doesn’t taste as sweet as that level of residual sugar suggests. 18 Points Jancis Robinson
The NV 40 Year Old Tawny Port was bottled in 2016 with a bar-top cork and 169 grams per liter of residual sugar. The back label talks of "freshness," which seems odd for a 40 Year Old, but Noval delivers all that and more here. The concentrated flavor burst on the lively finish shows touches of molasses and this is far more intense than the other Noval tawnies this issue on all fronts. However, its calling card is not intensity, but its amazingly youthful and fresh demeanor. The lift to the fruit gives this an irresistibly juicy finish, letting all those flavors linger beautifully. It is smooth, sensual and impeccably balanced, never obvious. This is quite fine. 95 Points Wine Advocate
FOOD PAIRING INSPIRATION
This port will pair supremely well with crème brûlée, foie gras, honey and almond cake and mature cheeses such as Parmesan and Manchego however at 40 years this wine deserves to be savoured and contemplated alone!
VINTAGE AND WINEMAKING
The grapes were trodden by foot and fermented in the traditional lagares of the Quinta, to obtain the best extraction.
Noval Tawny 20 years is a blend of old Ports from different vintages, matured in oak casks and with an average age of 20 years.
PRODUCER NOTES
A bodega producing Port since 1715. António José da Silva, a port shipper from Porto, acquired Quinta do Noval in 1894, after its devastation by phylloxera. He restored the property by replanting the vines.
Luiz Vasconcelos Porto, his son-in-law, was the author of a vast programme of innovations. He transformed many of the narrow older terraces into broader terraces. This permitted a more efficient use of the land and a better exposition to the sun.
Quinta do Noval made its name with the declaration of the 1931 Quinta do Noval Vintage Port, and the 1931 Quinta do Noval Nacional Vintage Port. Because of the global depression and the enormous production and shipment of the 1927 Vintage, most shippers did not declare the 1931. This success established Quinta do Noval among the great names of Vintage Port in the English and American markets, a leading position in terms of reputation which is maintained today.
Since 1993, Quinta do Noval is part of the international viticultural group of AXA Millésimes.
A new bottling line and warehouse was completed in 1997 in Alijo, near Pinhão. This project made Quinta do Noval the first of the traditional Port shippers to centralise all its activities in the Douro Valley.
In the 90's, around a hundred hectares of the domaine have been replanted, adapting pruning methods to suit each parcel. Today, we have high quality grapes which on one hand assure the excellence of Quinta do Noval Ports and on the other hand the production of Douro wines since the 2004 vintage.
