Description
OVERVIEW
A dedication from Angelo Gaja to the two most important women in his life, his first born daughter Gaia Gaja and his mother Clotilde Rey. This Chardonnay is a passion project from Chardonnay grapes grown in Barolo and Barbaresco from 40 year old vines.
From an excellent vintage, this is a complex and elegant Chardonnay that is beautiful today but will improve over the next 10-15 years.
CRITIC REVIEWS
The 2019 Gaia & Rey may be one of the finest vintages I have ever tasted of this white. Creamy, ample and expressive, the 2019 is a wonderfully, classy, polished wine. All the elements come together so effortlessly here. Bright and focused, the 2019 is fabulous and I say that as someone who is not especially fond of Italian Chardonnays. 2022-2029 95 Points. Antonio Galloni
FOOD PAIRING INSPIRATION
An elegant, lightly oaked Chardonnay that pairs well with shellfish and crab especially but also all fish, chicken and salads.
VINTAGE AND WINEMAKING
2019 has been described as a textbook vintage in Barbaresco and Barolo but that descriptor was coined for the Nebbiolo. However, the same conditions that perfectly ripened 'tricky' Nebbiolo also shone upon the Chardonnay grapes and produced what Galloni feels is the finest vintage of this wine ever produced.
The Chardonnay vines were planted in 1979 and 1989 on soils that are low in potassium and nitrogen, which limits vine growth and production and controls the vigour of the vine. Gaja's Gaia & Rey is harvested by hand. The grapes are destemmed, pressed and fermented in stainless steel tanks. The wine is then aged for 6-8 months in 225-litre French oak barrels before bottling.
PRODUCER NOTES
Established in 1859, Gaja is a family-owned winery in Italy of cult status in the wine world. Giovanni Gaja founded this winery, and his great-grandson, Angelo Gaja runs the estate today. The family produces and vinifies grapes in the 250 acres of vineyards it owns in Italy's popular wine region, Piedmont and Tuscany. This estate in Piedmonte s located in the districts of Barbaresco and Barolo.
Angelo Gaja is a legend in Italian winemaking and given a lot of credit for putting Piedmont on the global map today. Part of the avant-garde of 'new' Barolo producers, he has helped shape the current economic climate and high demand for the very best wines of the Piedmont.
