CRITIC REVIEWS

Incredible perfume! Rose petals, potpourri, mallow blossom, wild strawberries. Stunning nose. I could smell this all day. And everytime you lift it to your nose, there is something else there. Now I’m getting a little bit of just baked ginger cookies. Fills the mouth with headily fragrant wild strawberries and rose hips. Rooibos tea and very, very delicate spices, as if they’d been brushed onto the fruit with a feather. Ground ginger, white pepper. A heart-breakingly beautiful wine. Soars. And has lots of time ahead of it. 18/20 Points Jancisrobinson.com

There is lightness and airiness on the nose here, definitely some floral lift and lighter, more raspberry-like fruit, but underpinning is a graphite mineral sense of concentration. In the mouth it is supple and delicious, salty and ozoney, with raspberry pip tartness and a fine framework of tannin and acid that suggest a bit of longevity. It is, however, delicious now, and both powerfully concentrated and juicy to the end. 94 Points Tom Cannavan

FOOD PAIRING INSPIRATION

A wine for contemplation that can be drunk alone or enjoyed with charcuterie.

VINTAGE AND WINEMAKING

The vintage was marked by plenty of sunshine from May all the way to September which was particularly warm. The grapes were harvested in early October with good yields. The vintage was marked as outstanding by Robert Parker's Wine Advocate.

Produced from fruit from the oldest vines owned by the domaine, over 100 years old from the ancient Coume de Roy vineyard. The grapes added to this cuvee include Grenache Noir, Carignan, Grenache Gris and Grenache Blanc. All the grapes are hand picked with rigorous inspection in the vineyard and sorting table. Whole bunches are crushed under foot in demi-muids and plunged by hand 2-3 times a day during fermentation. The wine is matured for 18 months once blended to create the Les Genous cuvée.

PRODUCER NOTES

Founded in 2003 by three friends with a passion for wine, Domaine of the Bee is, amazingly, a side project for an MW (Justin Howard-Sneyd), his wife (Amanda Howard-Sneyd) and their accountant friend; Philippe Sacerdot. This trio manage to run a successful and iconic Languedoc winery whilst maintaining high flying city jobs in London. Truly living the dream then!

The vineyards are located close to Maury, home to the fortified vin doux naturel wines of the area. The area benefits from ancient vines of which Domaine of the Bee have three plots, one in La Coume de Roy planted with Grenache noir and Carignan with 100 year old vines. Another in Bac de Genievres with 100% Grenache Noir from 60 year old vines and La Roque, 100% Carignan from 80 year old vines.
