2019 Recaredo Terrers Brut Nature Corpinnat, Cava, Spain

OVERVIEW

A serious Cava for the serious wine lover who knows very well the exceptional quality that can be found in mature Cava especially from a top notch producer of which Recaredo is an undisputed champion.

This is a 'Corpinnat' sparkling wine, a 'cava' produced in a specific place within the Penedes region whose quality levels are the highest in terms of Catalan sparkling wine. This years vintage is made up of an assemblage of 65% Xarel·lo, 18% Macabeu and 17% Parellada.

Matured on its lees for 38 months in bottle and disgorged by hand, incredible time and effort goes into creating this most Champagne-esque sparkler. Sophisticated and elegant, with tiny bubbles, this bready, yeasty sparkler is the wine of choice for those in the know from Las Ramblas to London's top wine bars.

FOOD PAIRING INSPIRATION

Recaredo's Corpinnat is wonderful as an aperitif but can also be paired with sushi, BBQ prawns or roast chicken. 

VINTAGE AND WINEMAKING

A hot and dry summer blessed with spring and autumn rainfall either side, the vintage was fairly average with low yields but high quality fruit.

The vines are planted within the Corpinnat territory on high calcareous soils with no chemicals used in the production of the grapes. This is an organic and biodynamic wine. The grapes are hand harvested with the vinification taking place exclusively at Recaredo.

PRODUCER NOTES

One of a handful of truly exceptional Cava producers whose focus is on quality over quantity, the Catalans themselves rate Recaredo, alongside Gramona, as the kings of Cava. The house of Recaredo started back in the 1920s and it didn't take the founder, Josep Mata Capellades, long to decide that his winery would take the opposite approach to the other winemakers around him and strive for quality over quantity.

Today, Recaredo's wines spend the longest time in bottle on average of any of their counterparts and strive for a Champagne-esque style that is still somehow quintessentially Cava and improves with age like a Champagne.
