Cult Wine

OVERVIEW

The dry wines of Valpolicella come in tiers of quality with Amarone at the top, Valpolicella Classico Superiore in the middle and Classico at the bottom of that quality pyramid. However, there are degrees of quality by producer all the way in-between and if you're looking for the finest example of Valpolicella there's only one name to call upon; Guiseppe Quintarelli. This is best Valpolicella Classico Superiore DOC in the world... probably.

CRITIC REVIEWS

This was a humid and rainy vintage and many producers in the Valpolicella decided not to make their top-shelf Amarone wines, directing their fruit to wines like this instead. The Quintarelli Giuseppe 2014 Valpolicella Classico Superiore offers a spicy opener with tarry smoke and cured tobacco. It also shows some tart and brambly fruit, and this ties into what we can expect of the vintage. In truth, the ripeness is present and balanced. It undergoes a partial and brief appassimento. The 2014 is thinner than past vintages have been, but I am very much enjoying this more streamlined and elegant approach. Drink: 2022-2032. 93 Points. Wine Advocate

FOOD PAIRING INSPIRATION

A bigger wine than your standard Valpolicella even if less punchy than Quintarelli's Amarone, this wine can still stand up to the big bold red meat dishes, throw in tomatoes and you're in food pairing heaven. Serve this with your most impressive homemade lasagna for sure-fire bragging rights.

VINTAGE AND WINEMAKING

A standard vintage, the year was marked by below average temperatures and reduced levels of sunshine. Although this troubled many producers Quintarelli faired better than most and still produced many of the wines of the vintage - as every year.

From 30 year old vines, 50% of the grapes are pressed immediately after harvest, 50% are dried for 2 months on straw mats. Fermentation takes place with natural yeasts and the wine is racked and sits until February. The wine is then racked onto the less of the Amarone wine. Aged in Slavonian oak for seven years.

PRODUCER NOTES

The cult wines of Quintarelli are highly sought after by oenophiles the world over. Quintarelli has many wines in the stable from Valpolicella to Reciotoes to Amarones all benefitting from the exceptional attention to detail in the vineyard and winery. These wines are expensive due to the labour intensive processes that go into creating these modern masterpieces.

Sadly, Giuseppe died in 2012, now his daughter Fiorenza, her husband, Giampaolo Grigoli, and their children Francesco and Lorenzoare continuing his vinous legacy and are just as dedicated to quality as Giuseppe.
