OVERVIEW

Australian Shiraz with power and finesse? Here it is. The 98 point Yarra Yering Underhill Shiraz is a masterpiece of cool climate winemaking, taming and mastering both grape and terroir and has to be classed as one of the finest wines of its type in the world.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What a stunning aroma! It’s a heady cocktail of pummelled plums (ouch!), violets, grenadine, baking spices and yet more plums, those gorgeously scented Victoria plums, which is fitting, given where this wine comes from. It’s an extraordinary cornucopia of aromatic wonders and the palate isn’t too shabby either, showing an elegance and a translucency of flavour that is quite European in terms of weight and fragility (think Northern Rhone meets Margaux). It’s 100% Shiraz sourced from an unirrigated block planted in 1973. Watch out for a bit of natural sediment, so either decant or pour the last drops carefully. 13.5% alc. Drink now-2030. 98 Points. Australian Wine Companion

FOOD PAIRING INSPIRATION

This 100% Australian Shiraz will pair beautifully with steak, burgers and even roast lamb.

VINTAGE AND WINEMAKING

Struggles with budburst and fruit set were soon forgiven as ideal weather ripened the grapes to perfection in 2014 with Shiraz, Cabernet, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay all enjoying full phenolic ripeness.

The grapes are hand harvested and the wine fermented in large upright oak cask with 20% whole bunches. The wine is matured for 12 months in 50% 3500L one year old casks and the rest in 10% new oak French puncheons.

PRODUCER NOTES

The philosophy of the winemaking at Yarra Yering is to do all the hard work in the vineyard so less effort is needed in the winery. The quality of fruit is of paramount important. The grapes are hand picked and whole bunch fermentation is a favoured practise.

Winemaker, Sarah Crowe.
