Key General Wine Fridge Information
Choosing whether you need a wine fridge and then choosing the right one can be a daunting task. Below we answer some of the key questions to help you make the decision right for you.
1) How many bottles can a wine fridge hold?
Our range of wine fridges hold from 7 to over 300 bottles.
2) Does a wine fridge need to be plumbed in?
None of our wine fridges need to plumbed in, they are self contained units.
3) Can I store beer in a wine fridge?
You can store beer in a wine fridge, however, wine fridges operate best when over 75% capacity full, having a lot of void space to heat and cool is inefficient and causes the machine to work harder and for the average temperature range to fluctuate more. Having a few beers in the wine fridge is fine.
4) Can open wine bottles be kept in a wine fridge?
Open wine bottles can be kept in a wine fridge but unless they are under vacuum seal, the wine wont keep any longer than stored in a regular fridge.
5) What temperature should I set my wine fridge too?
If you want to mature wine over the longer term then a wine fridge should be set to 12°C, if you want your whites, red and sparkling wines set to service temperature then the temperatures are really a matter of taste. Most wine fridges do not go lower than 5°C or higher than 18 °C. White wines can be drunk anywhere from 2-12°C with some preferring White Burgundy close to room temperature whilst light reds can be enjoyed between 12-14°C and heavier reds 16-20°C.
6) How long does a wine fridge last?
All wine fridges will come with a warranty period whereby the manufacturer will support the customer if something goes wrong within that time frame. Wine fridges can last up to 10-15 years if properly maintained.
7) How does a wine fridge protect wine?
Wine maturation can be harmed by light, heat, vibration, bad odours and humidity. A wine fridge will combat all five of these by having a UV protected glass door, anti-vibration shelving, humidity management, temperature controls, and in the case of the premium wine cabinets and wine fridges; a carbon filter for bad odours.
8) Can I control the humidity in a wine fridge?
Very few wine fridges, except those of the highest quality from Liebherr, Eurocave or Swisscave will allow user-controlled humidity, however, all premium wine fridges have automatic, system controlled humidity settings.
9) How long will wine last in a wine fridge?
Unopened wine of quality will last for decades in a wine fridge as they imitate cellar conditions and thus the ideal environment in which to mature. Opened wines will also need a vacuum seal to last any additional time, keeping them in the wine fridge would not extend their duration any longer than a regular fridge would.
What Wine Fridge Features Do I Need?
There are dozens of different features across the suite of wine fridges. However, the wine you're storing, the number of bottles, the setting and a number of other conditions will influence which features you need. We go through them one by one.
1) Do I need a wine fridge with a winter system?
If the ambient temperature is colder than the setting of the wine fridge then it will also need a heating element. Wine fridges with winter systems allow the owner to place them in cold rooms.
2) Do I need dual temperature zones in my wine fridge?
For those with diverse wine collections, dual temperature zones are a game-changer. This feature allows you to store reds and whites at their respective ideal temperatures in the same unit, catering to the needs of different varietals or allow the ideal service temperature.
3) Do I need a wine fridge with humidity control?
Maintaining the right humidity level is crucial for preserving wine quality. Some wine fridges come with humidity control features to prevent corks from drying out, ensuring a proper seal and protection against oxidation.
4) Do I need vibration reduction in my wine fridge?
Excessive vibrations can disturb the sediment in wine, affecting its flavour and long term ageing potential. Wine fridges often incorporate vibration reduction technology to minimise vibrations and provide a stable environment for your bottles. Look out to limit vibration around the compressor and the shelving.
5) Why do wine fridges have UV-resistant glass?
Exposure to UV light can be harmful to wine. Many wine fridges have UV-resistant glass doors to protect your bottles from light exposure, preserving the integrity of the wine whilst some block out light altogether with a solid door.
6) Do I need adjustable shelves in my wine fridge?
Flexibility is key when it comes to organising your wine collection. Adjustable shelves in wine fridges allow you to customise the interior to accommodate different bottle sizes and shapes.
7) Why do wine fridges have LED lighting?
LED lights not only add a touch of sophistication but also provide a gentle and non-intrusive illumination inside the fridge. This makes it easy to locate your desired bottle without exposing the wine to excessive heat. Most LED lighting is white, but some fridges contain blue or even orange lighting whilst some operate colour changing lighting.
8) Do I need a wine fridge with digital display and controls?
Modern wine fridges often feature digital displays and controls for easy monitoring and adjustment of temperature settings. This user-friendly interface enhances the overall convenience of using the fridge.
9) Do I need a wine fridge with door locks?
If you have a particularly special or valuable wine collection, some wine fridges come equipped with door locks to provide an extra layer of security.
10) Do I need an alarm system on my wine fridge?
Some high-end wine fridges have alarm systems that alert you if the temperature inside the unit goes beyond the set range. This feature is valuable for preventing potential damage to your wine due to temperature fluctuations.
11) What is a self-defrosting wine fridge?
To reduce maintenance efforts, some wine fridges come with self-defrosting features, preventing ice buildup and ensuring a consistent temperature.
These features collectively contribute to creating an ideal environment for your wine collection, ensuring that each bottle is stored and preserved with the care it deserves.
Which Wine Fridges Are Energy Efficient & How Much Power Do They Use?
There are dozens of different features across the suite of wine fridges. However, the wine you're storing, the number of bottles, the setting and a number of other conditions will influence which features you need. We go through them one by one.
1) How to choose an energy efficient wine fridge?
Energy-efficient wine fridges are designed to minimise power consumption while still maintaining optimal storage conditions. Look for units with a low annual consumption.
2) How expensive is it to run a wine fridge?
The energy rating of every wine fridge is listed on the product page, however, at today's energy prices a wine fridge will cost anything from £25-£100 per year to run depending on the energy rating and how hard it has to work. A wine cabinet in a cold garage will work harder than an undercounter unit in a kitchen.
