OVERVIEW

An oak aged, textured and enigmatic Sauvignon Blanc full of body, freshness and intrigue. A really interesting Sauvignon Blanc, comparable to the Te Koko from Cloudy Bay yet more spicy, rich and with exceptional purity of fruit. A complex wine that evolves in the glass and a must try for the serious Sauvignon Blanc fan.

CRITIC REVIEWS

Fermented in old oak using wild yeasts. Textural sauvignon blanc with red capsicum, gooseberry, nectarine together with savoury ginger, toasted nut and struck flint flavours. Great power and purity. 95 Points. Bob Campbell

FOOD PAIRING INSPIRATION

This 95 point rich and textured Sauvignon Blanc from the iconic Marlborough area of New Zealand will pair fabulously with grilled fish, sushi, light or goats cheese salads and Thai food.

VINTAGE AND WINEMAKING

An outstanding vintage that started off nervously with early frosts. However, from fruit-set all the way to harvest the perfect levels of heat, sunshine and precipitation followed with perfectly ripe grapes emerging from every vineyard. Harvest began at the end of March, coinciding with the international lockdown, however, with winemaking seen an essential service production did not stop.

Some vineyards were harvested by machine during cool (often cold) night time conditions and others by hand during the day. The grapes were lightly pressed to yield a modest volume of high-quality juice, which was then cold-settled prior to racking into French oak barriques, a small percentage of which were new. The juice was allowed to undergo spontaneous indigenous yeast fermentation, the tail end of which continued for well over six months. The wine had occasional lees stirring and approximately two-thirds underwent malolactic fermentation. It was transferred out of oak prior to the following harvest and left on yeast lees for a further five months. The wine was bottled in September 2021 with alcohol 13.5%, pH 3.16 and acidity 6.3 g/l.

PRODUCER NOTES

The inimitable and tightly knit Judd family are at the helm of Greywacke, also the name of the familiar New Zealand bedrock in this region. And, a bedrock this label has undoubtedly become, synonymous with exceptional quality in Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir.

The Greywacke ethos centres around natural and sustainable winemaking with organically farmed sites and a small, dedicated team running the entire operation. Crop levels are restricted to enhance concentration of flavour and a long, cool growing season produces fruit with incredible varietal intensity and bright, natural acidity. Meticulous canopy management regimes are employed to provide sufficient fruit exposure to deliver ripeness of flavour, textural richness and optimum acid balance. Greywacke is accredited with AMW status (Appellation Marlborough Wine), ensuring provenance, authenticity and integrity.
