2016 Vaio Armaron Amarone, Serego Alighieri, Veneto, Italy

Somm Picks

OVERVIEW

From the best vintage of the last 30 years; this full bodied, complex Amarone is supremely well made and will improve over time to be something really very special and has just entered into its drinking window. The Serego Alighieri label is within the Masi fold; masters of Amarone.

An important Amarone with extraordinary power and complexity: a classic in the Italian winemaking portfolio. This is the icon wine of the historic Serego Alighieri estate and comes from the eponymous vineyard, the source it seems of the very name Amarone itself. Its elegant personality is enhanced by the use of the Serego Alighieri clone of the Molinara grape and by ageing in cherry-wood casks, as family tradition dictates.

CRITIC REVIEWS (15)

Perfectly ripe aromas of black plums and black cherries, both brooding and elegant, rush out of the glass. Supported by notes of Dutch cocoa, espresso, and a dried bouquet of herbs and flowers. The lush palate is full of dark fruit flavors with fine and firm tannins and a pop of acidity. 96 Points. Wine Enthusiast

A deep but very fresh Amarone with mussel and sea-urchin character to the aromas of blackberries, wet stones, roasted herbs and a hint of balsamic savoriness. Very tight and nicely chewy, with plenty of dusty tannins that coat the palate before a long, chocolatey finish with savory cocoa-powder bitterness. Drinkable now, but better after 2023.94 Points. James Suckling

FOOD PAIRING INSPIRATION

Perfect with red meat, game, quails, roasts and full-flavoured dishes. Excellent match for mature cheeses with bite, such as parmesan or pecorino. Fabulous full-blown after-dinner wine.

VINTAGE AND WINEMAKING

The 2016 Amarone vintage is renowned for its exceptional quality and complexity. Produced in the Valpolicella region of Italy, this rich and full-bodied red wine showcases the classic Amarone characteristics of deep, concentrated flavors and a velvety texture. The year's weather conditions, with a warm and dry growing season followed by a mild autumn, allowed the grapes to ripen fully, resulting in intense aromas of dark fruits, dried cherries, and a subtle hint of spices. The wine's well-balanced acidity and structured tannins make it suitable for aging, promising a long and rewarding maturation in the bottle. The 2016 Amarone is a testament to the craftsmanship of the winemakers and the unique terroir of the Valpolicella, making it a highly sought-after vintage among wine connoisseurs.

PRODUCER NOTES

With a viticultural tradition spanning 650 years and 21 familial generations, Serego Alighieri is one of the Veneto's most well known estates. More recently in the early 1970's the domaine was acquired by the Masi Agricole family, this icon of Italian wine continues to produce Amarone wines of a far superior quality than the price point indicates.
