Description
OVERVIEW
One of Italy's most iconic wines, Tignanello is made by the Antinori family in the heart of the Chianti Classico region. The family has been making wines for over 600 years. The tradition began in 1385 when Giovanni di Piero Antinori joined the “Arte Fiorentina dei Vinattieri” (the Florentine Winemakers’ Guild).
A favourite of critics and stars alike, Tignanello, even at over £100 still represents good value for money in the wine superstar range. Always jam packed with delicious red Sangiovese fruit the 2020 has the added benefit of being approachable today with a fascinating evolution ahead of it for the next two decade. A wine for drinking and investment.
CRITIC REVIEWS
The 2020 Tignanello is so primary, so intensely fruit-driven, that it almost tastes like a barrel sample. A burst of red Sangiovese fruit opens first, followed by hints of blood orange, cinnamon, spice, dried flowers and mocha develop later. Time in the glass brings out striking dimensions. In 2020, Tignanello is wonderfully sleek and racy, with fine tannins that lie below a core of bright, sculpted fruit. The balance here is just sublime. I can't wait to revisit the 2020 with age."
96 Points, Antonio Galloni (Drink 2028 to 2045).
FOOD PAIRING INSPIRATION
This wine pairs well with Grilled Mushrooms, Grilled Beef or Pecorino cheese. Try this with a meaty pizza for something a bit different.
VINTAGE AND WINEMAKING
The 2020 growing season in Chianti Classico was defined by normal climatic conditions, winter was rather cold with limited rainfall and the first half of spring was cool and rainy especially during the months of April and May. Summer weather was hot, uninterrupted by major heat spikes, with slightly higher than average precipitation levels ensuring a normal growth cycle of both the vines and grape clusters. Ideal climatic conditions set in at the end of August and continued throughout September and October allowing all grape varieties grown in the Tignanello vineyard to reach optimal ripeness. Harvesting activities began in the second half of September beginning with Sangiovese and were concluded the 16th of October with Cabernet.
PRODUCER NOTES
The eponymous vineyards of Tignanello are located in in the middle of the Chianti Classico region. They cover 57 hectares and are situated between the Pesa and Greve river valleys.
Tignanello and the other prized estate of the winery, Solaia, are located on the same hillside, sharing the same soils of marine marlstone, rich in schist and limestone. They have a south western exposure and are about 400 mts above sea level. There is a wide diurnal difference in temperature with hot days leading into cool nights. This allows the grapes the achieve good acidity and even balance. The Tignanello vinyards chiefly produce Sangiovese but there is also a small parcel of Cabernet Franc grown there as well.
