OVERVIEW
An oak matured Sauvignon Blanc that still retains so much of that original Marlborough zip and tang yet enjoys some rounding out of flavours thanks to the barrel maturation. A real treat for serious Sauvignon Blanc fans with the '19 the best we've ever tried.
CRITIC REVIEWS
A sophisticated trailblazing oak-matured sauvignon blanc, which retains tangy varietal character while adding subtle toast and ginger flavours from barrel maturation. A wonderful texture and a crisp, dry and lingering finish. 95 Points. The Real Review
Pristine aromas of sliced limes, lemons, green melon and hints of lemon grass follow through to a full body with dense fruit, yet framed by a lightly phenolic texture that holds the whole thing together, tightening the fruit in the center-palate. Beautiful finish. One of the best ever. Drink now. Screw cap. 95 Points. James Suckling
FOOD PAIRING INSPIRATION
This 95 point Sauvignon Blanc will pair nicely with lightly spiced food like Thai or Chinese.
VINTAGE AND WINEMAKING
2019 is an excellent vintage after a run of 3-4 really quite poor Marlborough vintages and the best since 2010.
Te Koko ferments in French oak barrels with indigenous yeasts, gaining complexity over four to five months under the watchful eye of the winemaking team. The wine then rests in barrel on fine lees for 15 months before blending and maturation in Cloudy Bay’s cellars.
PRODUCER NOTES
Obsessed with quality all the way along the production line from vine to glass, Cloudy Bay engage in almost obsessive vineyard management that results in low yields but the highest quality grapes.
Founded in 1983 and with the first vintage in 1985, Cloudy Bay very quickly became an international phenomenon, especially here in the UK where the 1990's white wine market was completely dominated by New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. While fashions have changed there still exists a large cohort of British drinkers who continue to swear by both Marlborough and Cloudy Bay.
Cloudy Bay have never sat on their laurels, innovating and challenging the norms of NZ wine making all through their vinous history right up until the present day.
