2020 Pinot Gris, Greywacke, Marlborough, New Zealand
OVERVIEW
From the kings of Marlborough, this Pinot Gris offers an interesting alternative to the infamous Sauvignon Blancs produced at Greywacke. Typically rich, opulent and full of honey, quince and generous yellow fruits, the Pinot Gris is always delicious and in 2020 complex too with a range of fruit and floral aromas and around 9 g/l residual sugar (off dry).
CRITIC REVIEWS
‘Due to EU bureaucracy (and very ripe grapes), Greywacke's 2019 Pinot Gris could not enter Europe, and so the 2020 Pinot Gris will be what Europeans drink while the rest of the world sips the 2019. The 2020 is a little funkier than the 2019, offering talc, crunchy pear and white flowers and a touch of reduction. While the 2019 is more open and floral, there's a greater sense of tension and energy in the 2020, which Judd suggests may be due to the clone and the parcel selection, and a slightly cooler season – as well as being a year younger.’ 92 Points. FOOD PAIRING INSPIRATION
This 92 point rich, off-dry and opulent Pinot Gris will pair famously with Japanese food.
VINTAGE AND WINEMAKING
An outstanding vintage that started off nervously with early frosts. However, from fruit-set all the way to harvest the perfect levels of heat, sunshine and precipitation followed with perfectly ripe grapes emerging from every vineyard. Harvest began at the end of March, coinciding with the international lockdown, however, with winemaking seen an essential service production did not stop.
The two vineyards were hand-picked separately at high ripeness levels and whole-bunch pressed using very low maceration press cycles. The resulting juice was cold settled, then racked to fermentation vessels. Most of the juice went through a natural indigenous yeast fermentation in old French oak barriques and the balance was fermented in stainless steel tanks using cultured yeast. Towards the end of fermentation all the wine was transferred to stainless steel tanks, where the fermentations were stopped, retaining 9 g/l residual sugar. The blended wine was then filled into old barrels, where it remained on yeast lees for a further five months, prior to bottling in November 2020, with alcohol 14.2%, pH 3.38 and acidity 5.6 g/l.
PRODUCER NOTES
The inimitable and tightly knit Judd family are at the helm of Greywacke, also the name of the familiar New Zealand bedrock in this region. And, a bedrock this label has undoubtedly become, synonymous with exceptional quality in Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir.
The Greywacke ethos centres around natural and sustainable winemaking with organically farmed sites and a small, dedicated team running the entire operation. Crop levels are restricted to enhance concentration of flavour and a long, cool growing season produces fruit with incredible varietal intensity and bright, natural acidity. Meticulous canopy management regimes are employed to provide sufficient fruit exposure to deliver ripeness of flavour, textural richness and optimum acid balance. Greywacke is accredited with AMW status (Appellation Marlborough Wine), ensuring provenance, authenticity and integrity.
