2019 Perbacco Nebbiolo Langhe, Vietti, Piedmont, Italy
OVERVIEW
A 'baby' Barolo that is approachable today, the grapes for this wine come from vineyard sites in Barolo and Barbaresco as per the Castiglione and some of the wine that is also due for that Barolo makes it into the Perbacco blend. The wine is then aged for around 18 months in Slavonian casks. Vietti's Perbacco is superb value for money and a pure, ready-to-go hit of classic Nebbiolo.
CRITIC REVIEWS
The 2019 Langhe Nebbiolo Perbacco shows a rusty or earthy side that feels more pronounced in this vintage. This wine represents an assembly of all the wine that is left over after the final blend of the Barolo Castiglione is confirmed (at year three). This wine sees two years in large oak casks, but this 40,000-bottle release hits the market more than one year earlier than the Barolo. With a silky, lean texture, Perbacco is a good introduction to Nebbiolo. Best After 2022. 91 Points. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
FOOD PAIRING INSPIRATION
We love this wine with a mushroom risotto or polenta and black truffle.
VINTAGE AND WINEMAKING
The 2019 vintage was declared 'classic & traditional' by the Consorzio Barbera d’Asti e Vini del Monferrato. A higher quality yield than 2018 or 2017 but a significantly lower yield by around 15%.
The grapes for this wine are grown in various selected vineyards sites mostly in the Barolo area and a minor part in Barbaresco. The vineyards soil is made of marl (limestone in combination with clay).
Alcoholic fermentation lasts around 3-4 weeks at controlled temperatures (28°-32°) then malolactic fermentation takes place in steel tanks. Each parcel is processed and aged separately until the selection is made for Perbacco.
The wine is aged in total for approximately 16-18 months in Slavonian casks.
PRODUCER NOTES
One of the most important and well known producers in the Piedmont, Vietti are trendsetters who are partially responsible for the success of the region today thanks to their focus on single vineyard wines back in the 1950's.
The first Vietti labelled vintage was released in 1919 although the family had been involved in winemaking for generations prior to that. Farmers, grape growing was only a percentage of the family income.
In 1952, Alfredo Currado (Luciana Vietti’s husband) decided to focus the wine production on quality and started making single vineyards wines and increasing the production level in the vineyard and winery. This focus on quality allowed the Vietti winery to grow into one of the top-level producers in Piemonte and was one of the first wineries to export its products to the US. His focus on single vineyard was copied by most Barolo and Barbaresco producers today and is the reason single vineyard wines exist today.
