2016 Pagodes de Cos d’Estournel, St Estephe, Bordeaux, France

Somm Picks

OVERVIEW

Looking for a taste of ultra-premium Bordeaux at a fraction of the price? The second wine from superstar estate, Cos d'Estournel may well fit the bill. The high percentage of Merlot in this Bordeaux blend makes this wine a little more approachable in youth but don't be fooled, this is a full bodied, macho effort from Cos in the best vintage since 2010.

CRITIC REVIEWS

A red with very deep and intense fruit character, yet rich tannins to back it all up. Full-bodied, layered and powerful. The second wine of Cos d’Estournel is serious again in 2016. Try from 2025. 94 Points. James Suckling

The 2016 Les Pagodes de Cos has a wonderful bouquet of vibrant, expressive red berry fruit, strawberry and raspberry, conveying a tangible sense of mineralité and tension; the new oak is very well integrated here. The balanced palate offers fine-boned tannins and very well judged acidity. Utterly harmonious, with a caressing and beautifully poised finish. This is a top-class Saint-Estèphe that will age with panache. Tasted blind at the Southwold tasting. 2021 - 2035. 92 Points. Neal Martin (August 2020)

Just over half of the crop at Cos went into the second wine in 2016, with most of it from the same plots as usual. Subtly oaked and graceful, it’s a St. Estèphe-meets-Margaux style that’s a world away from what the château produced in 2009. Scented, poised and refined. 2022-30. 94 Points. Tim Atkin

VINTAGE AND WINEMAKING

2016 was an excellent year in Bordeaux. Spring started out wet but as the summer progressed, the days turned to hot and sunny, although the nights were cool which aided the grapes in retaining acidity and aromatics. The steady weather during the summer allowed the grapes to mature at a leisurely pace and by harvest producers were able to pick unrushed. Overall, the wines have sophisticated structure with rich fruit and a balance between acidity, alcohol and tannins.

Cabernet Sauvignon 50%, Merlot 46.5%, Petit Verdot 3%, Cabernet Franc 0.5%.

PRODUCER NOTES

Classified as a 2ème Cru Classé and punching above it's weight within that classification, the wines of Cos d’Estournel are some of the world's finest and the estate is undoubtedly the shining star of St Estephe.

Named after its 19th century owner, Louis-Gaspard d'Estournel, he is the man responsible for the stand-out oriental designs that marks this particular area of the Medoc. Just north of Lafite, bordered Pauillac, many consider this wine closer in style to its neighbours in the south than those of St Estephe.

With a relatively high Merlot % of the blend these wines are a touch more supple than many in the Medoc but are still powerful and full bodied.
