OVERVIEW

A bold, Barossa Shiraz for drinking today, the Orphan Bank Shiraz is a wine made from exceptionally old Barossa vines. The average age of the vines used to produce this wine are 85 years with some over 150 years old.

CRITIC REVIEWS

These old vines were relocated and now deliver this rich, composed and seamless shiraz that has ripe blackberry and plum aromas and flavors with supple, smooth-honed tannins that sit fresh and smoothly refined. Drink or hold. 93 Points. James Suckling

The full-bodied 2017 Orphan Bank Shiraz isn't quite as plush and forward as the 2018, but it remains a super Shiraz, boasting expressive notes of roasted meat and ripe boysenberries, wrapped in a gentle wreath of wild herbs. The structure is a bit too acid-dependent this vintage, so drink it over the near term, while the fruit is still youthfully bold92 Points. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

FOOD PAIRING INSPIRATION

This 100% Barossa Shiraz will pair with pork, roast lamb and a good old barbeque.

VINTAGE AND WINEMAKING

Less impressive than the magnificent 2018 vintage, but 2017 was a year for winemakers looking for a more fresh and elegant style, and with a Barossa Shiraz, that might be a good thing! The harvest took place a little later than in more recent years.

The grapes are 100% Syrah/Shiraz with 23 months spent in 40% new French oak.

PRODUCER NOTES

Owned by the same winemaking family since 1843, there's Italian blood running through Langmeil. With some of the oldest vines in Barossa, Langmeil are perhaps one of the most skilled exponents of old vine marking.

Capturing the distinctive characteristics of the Barossa's rich terroirs is the foundation of each Langmeil wine, these are crafted with dedication and an individual style. In the winery, Head Winemaker Paul Lindner draws on both old and new world techniques, while practicing both minimal filtration and human intervention to ensure the grape's full potential is realised.

The vineyards are planted to Riesling, Chardonnay, Marsanne, Viognier, Roussanne, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Shiraz and Malbec.
