2021 Bourgogne Oncle Vincent, Olivier Leflaive, Burgundy, France

Somm Picks

OVERVIEW

From Allan Meadows to Jasper Morris, critics agree that Leflaive's Oncle Vincent is a superb value entry level white Burgundy that offers good richness and depth for the money. Made from Puligny Montrachet vines from calcarious clay, this oaked Chardonnay offers real freshness and depth of fruit rarely found at this price point in white Burgundy and is especially good in 2020; a case buy.

CRITIC REVIEWS

Here too there is a whiff of matchstick character to the more floral and petrol suffused nose. There is also a bit more richness and volume to the seductive medium-bodied flavors that deliver better persistence and depth. This is a very good Bourgogne and also well worth a look. *Outstanding, Top Value! Allan Meadows

From seven plots, using 15% new wood, bottled yesterday. Pale colour, rather discreet nose at the moment but suggesting potential. A little bit of reduction here, but to a beneficial degree, and with a great deal more weight behind. Very persistent. This is an excellent Oncle Vincent, a really big step up this year. 90 Points Jasper Morris

FOOD PAIRING INSPIRATION

This wine will pair well with white fish, crab, scallops or chicken dishes.

VINTAGE AND WINEMAKING

Similar to 2017 in quality, this classic white Burgundy vintage has all the hallmarks of a classic where even the entry level Bourgogne wines benefitted well from the growing season and show ageing potential.

After a manul harvest and sorting, Oncle Vincent spends 12 months ageing with 8 of those months in 15% new oak and is then fined and filtered before release.

PRODUCER NOTES

Olivier Leflaive was born, auspiciously, in the 1945 vintage and attended business school in Reims (a sign of his future in Champagne perhaps?) and went, not to his father's vines, but to work in TV and media in Paris. Ten years later, Olivier returned to his family's vineyards and alongside uncle Vincent began winemaking at Leflaive. In 2010 he retired and now his children run the domaine.
