NV Nyetimber Classic Cuvée, England

Somm Picks

OVERVIEW

The pride of the British wine scene, the Nyetimber Estate lies across three sites in Sussex, Hampshire and Kent. The south facing slopes get the best possible sun exposure, ensuring that the grapes achieve the optimum level of ripeness. The soils are greensand and chalk, much like the best sparkling wine producing regions in the world. The climate is ideal for the slow ripening of the grapes. Nyetimber use the traditional Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grapes as per Champagne for their sparkling wine.

Nyetimber use the 'traditonal method' of making sparkling wine, aging them on the lees and in bottle for an extended amount of time. This gives the wine the finesse and elegance that has become the signature of Nyetimber sparkling wine.

CRITIC REVIEWS

An almost perfumed hint of hedgerow fruit precedes the richer notes of ripe apple on the nose. This is followed by lovely yeasty hints of autolysis. On the palate, these notions combine in a most convincing joyful fashion. Every tiny bubble that bursts brings some of that rounded, fruity but ultimately fresh vividness. This comes with serious intent but an even greater proportion of charm. Anne Krebiehl MW 93 Points Wine Enthusiast

Outstanding nose, with all the bready complexity of great sparkling. Saline and zippy, with excellent apple and lemon fruit on the palate. Not at all sharp, with excellent balance and flesh on the body. Mature, mushroomy character on the finish. Expertly done. 17.5/20 Points. Richard Hemming, jancisrobinson.com (August 2020)

FOOD PAIRING INSPIRATION

The quintessential pairing for the Nyetimber Classic Cuvee is good old British Fish and Chips and who are we to argue with that!

VINTAGE AND WINEMAKING

The classic cuvee is a blend of all three grapes, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. The grapes come from all three sites and from various vintages. The grapes are handpicked parcel by parcel to ensure quality, ripeness and character. The fruit is then gently pressed and vinified separately. They are aged on the lees in bottle for an extensive amount of time, usually three years, if not a bit longer. The result is a toasty, and spicy wine with baked apple, pastry and honey flavours.

PRODUCER NOTES

Grapes were first planted on the Nyetimber estates in 1988 but it was not until 2006 when the estate was bought by Eric Heerema that the estate began to reach its full potential. Eric recruited the husband and wife team of Cherie Spriggs and Brad Greatrix to create his vision of fine English sparkling wine.

Since then, they have dedicated themselves to growing the best grapes from the best sites and have now gone on to achieve world wide acclaim.  They have won many sparkling wine competitions and Nyetimber is  now recognised as one of the world's greatest sparkling wines.
