OVERVIEW
The 2022 Domaine des Bosquets “Réserve” Gigondas is a striking example of southern Rhône craftsmanship, blending 60–70% Grenache with Syrah, Mourvèdre, and a touch of Cinsault.
On the nose, expect an enticing bouquet of ripe red and black fruits — think blackberries, plums, black cherries — mingled with wild herbs, garrigue, and subtle floral notes, all lifted by delicate spice, mineral, and chalky undertones.
Medium to full-bodied on the palate, the wine delivers concentrated fruit framed by fine, polished tannins and lively acidity. Its structure is balanced yet powerful, with excellent length and a finish that reveals soft cedar, spice and a mineral-driven persistence.
Aged for around 18 months — zunächst in various French oak barrels then in concrete vats — the 2022 Réserve is both elegant and robust: approachable now but with the depth and backbone to age gracefully over the next 8–10 years.
FOOD PAIRING INSPIRATION
This excellent Gigondas is going to pair really well with most grilled meats, BBQ food, Moroccan tagines and beef/lamb casseroles.
VINTAGE AND WINEMAKING
The 2022 vintage in Gigondas proved to be something of a triumph despite difficult climatic conditions. The year started very dry: winter and spring were mild but unusually rain-free, with some of the driest conditions recorded in decades, prompting early bud-burst and accelerated growth.
Summer brought intense heat and prolonged drought, pushing vines into stress — grape clusters were often smaller, and dehydration risk was high. A late-August rain shower provided crucial respite, allowing grapes to rehydrate and complete ripening.
As a result, yields were generally lower than average — but grapes were smaller, intensely concentrated and healthy, largely free of fungal disease. Winemakers describe 2022 as powerful yet balanced: wines show vivid varietal fruit, exotic spice, garrigue character, and often a fresher acidity than the warmer 2020 vintage.
Overall, 2022 is shaping up as a strong, age-worthy vintage for Gigondas — rich, concentrated, and expressive, yet not overly heavy, with many wines already drinking well and showing potential for further development.
PRODUCER NOTES
The very first plantings within Gigondas in 1376 were at Domaine des Bosquets. Since being bought by the Bréchet family in 2006, the Domaine has gone from strength to strength with critical acclaim from all quarters. These delicious wines offer a freshness and finesse rarely seen in the home of the fruit bomb with the Domaine being described as the 'the Chambolle Musigny of the Rhône' by Jeb Dunnock. Early picking and larger barrels are part of the success of finessing what can be incredibly bold wines from old vines in a very hot climate.
