2018 Gigondas Reserve, Domaine des Bosquets, Rhone, France
OVERVIEW
A real insider classic, the Domaine des Bosquets reserve Gigondas faired especially well in 2018 which was rated as an outstanding vintage in Gigondas. This Gigondas is fresh and lively despite 15% alcohol and old vines with dense, concentrated, ripe dark fruits. With a bold structure, this wine is drinking well today but will last and evolve for another ten years.
CRITIC REVIEWS
It's hard to name a favorite among Bosquet's fascinating single-vineyard study of Gigondas, but this blend of the producer's multiple vineyard sites allows a scenic glimpse of Gigondas as a whole. Concentrated with flavors of preserved black plum and cassis, the richly penetrating wine is marked by shades of graphite, dried clay and garrigue. It's ample and broad shouldered but maintains thrilling freshness and vitality through a long, feathery finish. At peak now through 2030, the wine is likely to hold much longer still. 95 Points Wine Enthusiast
Although I reported differently last year, the final blend of the 2018 Gigondas is approximately 65% Grenache, with the rest a mix of Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault (in descending order of preponderance). Gentle notes of bay leaf and thyme accent purple raspberries on the nose, while the palate is full-bodied and generous, showing supple, silky tannins and surprisingly crisp acids on the finish. 93 Points Wine Advocate
FOOD PAIRING INSPIRATION
This excellent Gigondas is going to pair really well with most grilled meats, BBQ food, Moroccan tagines and beef/lamb casseroles.
VINTAGE AND WINEMAKING
The 2018 vintage has been rated outstanding by Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. Despite a challenging growing season the wines of Gigondas and Chateauneuf du Pape were exceptional with great structure, ripe fruit and concentration.
The grapes were handpicked and very carefully sorted in both the vineyard and the winery. Each plot was vinified separately. The winemaking lasted approximately one month with three phrases: a cold soak with pumping over, alcoholic fermentation at 28°C with a mix of pumping over and punching down, and maceration on lees. Malolactic fermentation ended in mid-November. The wine was aged for 18 months in two stages. For the first 12 months, the parcels were aged separately, with Syrah in 228 litres oak barrels, Grenache in demi-muids of 500/600 litres and the Mourvedre and Cinsault in 228 litre oak barrels. This was followed by six months of ageing together in concrete tanks prior to bottling.
PRODUCER NOTES
The very first plantings within Gigondas in 1376 were at Domaine des Bosquets. Since being bought by the Bréchet family in 2006, the Domaine has gone from strength to strength with critical acclaim from all quarters. These delicious wines offer a freshness and finesse rarely seen in the home of the fruit bomb with the Domaine being described as the 'the Chambolle Musigny of the Rhône' by Jeb Dunnock. Early picking and larger barrels are part of the success of finessing what can be incredibly bold wines from old vines in a very hot climate.
