OVERVIEW

Renowned in France, Drappier's Carte d'Or Brut NV is a favourite with oenophiles and critics alike scoring an unheard of 19/20 with Jancis Robinson in prior years. We feel the Drappier Carte d'Or Brut is superior to the Bollinger and Tattinger offerings at the same price point.

Voted #3 on the Forbes list of 'Best Champagnes you've never heard of' it's a small miracle to us that the Drappier Carte d'Or Brut remains so affordable and we're proud to call it our 'house' Champagne. A bigger and bolder style of Champagne than many of its competitors, Drappier Carte d'Or Brut is ideal for a celebration such as a wedding or large gathering thanks to being both seriously delicious and relatively affordable.

CRITIC REVIEWS

Described by Drappier as 'almost a blanc de noirs', this Pinot Noir-dominant wine sourced from the Côte des Bar is the house's calling card. 5% of the cuvée is matured in barrels for a year for added complexity and texture, and it's bottled unfiltered with a fairly low dosage of 7g/l. There are some melon and apple scents on the nose along with a splash of red fruits, while the palate is intense, with notes of apple, quince and grape wrapped in a red-fruit veil. It's full-bodied and long, with a lovely texture from the red wine tannins and oak-matured portion. 91 PointsDecanter Magazine

FOOD PAIRING INSPIRATION

This wine is almost a blanc de noirs as so dominated by Pinot Noir and will match well with shellfish and seafood, hard cheese and cured hams.

VINTAGE AND WINEMAKING

The Drappier Carte d'Or blend is 80% Pinot Noir, 15% Chardonnay and 5% Pinot Meunier, the vineyards resting on Jurassic Kimmeridgian limestone and chalk. The grapes are press calibrated at a low pressure with vinification by gravity. Little sulphur is added to the wine and the dosage is 6.5g/l qualifying the wine as dry.

PRODUCER NOTES

Eight generations of Famille Drappier have takenon the reigns at this respected Champagne house and as of today Michel and Sylive run the enterprise with their children, Charlene and Hugo are becoming more involved in the day to day running.

Today, the family vineyard spans over 62 hectares, without including those under contractual arrangements with other growers.

The Drappier vineyard, mainly located in the village of Urville, maintains the strong identity of the Bar-sur-Aube arrondissement, characterised by the influence of Pinot Noir. This grape prevails here, representing 70% of the estate, supplemented by Pinot Meunier at 15%, Chardonnay at 9%, and old grape varieties at 6%.

Proximity to the vines is necessary to keep a close eye on how they evolve and interact with their environment. Because the vineyards are all local, the family has stepped up its sustainable approach to viticulture, and become certified as “organic”.
