OVERVIEW

A baby Tignanello, since 2011 the grapes for Antinori's Chianti Classico Riserva have come from Tenuta Tignanello. The use of French oak has also added to a marked improvement in the quality of this wine over the last 10 years. A classic example of quality Sangiovese at a fair price point.

CRITIC REVIEWS (2019)

The 2019 Chianti Classico Riserva Marchese Antinori is rich, layered and exceptionally polished. This is an especially serious vintage for the Marchese Antinori. All of the fruit comes from the Antinori family's Tignanello estate. Silky tannins wrap around a core of dark red cherry/plum, spice, leather and tobacco. There's tremendous weight, power and depth, that much is pretty clear. 93 Points Vinous

Bright ruby red. Opens on the nose with a delicate scent of noble wood, fine blackberry and forest fruit, supported by fine spice, ripe cherry on the finish. On the palate polished and with beautiful compactness, spreads finely over the tongue, also salty, great length. 92 Points. Falstaff

This has enticing aromas recalling ripe plum, fragrant blue flower and oak-driven spice. On the smooth, savory palate, supple, fine-grained tannins accompany juicy Marasca cherry, cassis, vanilla and star anise. Fresh acidity keeps it balanced92 Points. Wine Enthusiast

FOOD PAIRING INSPIRATION

This wine pairs well with Grilled Mushrooms, Grilled Beef or Pecorino cheese. Try this with a meaty pizza for something a bit different.

VINTAGE AND WINEMAKING

The grapes for the Chianti Classico Reserva are grown at Tenuta Tignanello. The 2019 growing season in Chianti Classico was defined by normal climatic conditions, winter was rather cold with limited rainfall and the first half of spring was cool and rainy especially during the months of April and May. Summer weather was hot, uninterrupted by major heat spikes, with slightly higher than average precipitation levels ensuring a normal growth cycle of both the vines and grape clusters. Ideal climatic conditions set in at the end of August and continued throughout September and October allowing all grape varieties grown in the Tignanello vineyard to reach optimal ripeness. Harvesting activities began in the second half of September beginning with Sangiovese and were concluded the 16th of October with Cabernet.

PRODUCER NOTES

The eponymous vineyards of Tignanello are located in in the middle of the Chianti Classico region. They cover 57 hectares and are situated between the Pesa and Greve river valleys.

Tignanello and the other prized estate of the winery, Solaia, are located on the same hillside, sharing the same soils of marine marlstone, rich in schist and limestone. They have a south western exposure and are about 400 mts above sea level. There is a wide diurnal difference in temperature with hot days leading into cool nights. This allows the grapes the achieve good acidity and even balance.  The Tignanello vinyards chiefly produce Sangiovese but there is also a small parcel of Cabernet Franc grown there as well.

The Chianti Classico bottling contains 90% Sangiovese and 10% Cabenet Sauvignon and spends 12 months in French barrique.
