Description
OVERVIEW
The flagship wine from organic and biodynamic producer Beaurenard, their Chateauneuf-du-Pape rouge is a masterclass in sheer drinkability, a serious wine that is approachable relatively young (from '24) and will improve over the coming decade. Jam packed with rich, dark fruit and spice, this 95 point wine is offered at a great price point. We really enjoy this Rhone classic with Moroccan dishes.
CRITIC REVIEWS
Deep, dark and rich, the wine is concentrated, full-bodied, powerful, lush, and lusciously textured with gobs of dark and bright red fruits and spice on the nose and palate. Pure, dark black cherries, velvet-textured tannins and waves of spice, licorice, plums, kirsch and pepper. Give this a few years in the cellar to soften and develop and it’s going to be just great to enjoy for ages. Drink from 2024 - 2035. 95 Points. Jeff Leve
FOOD PAIRING INSPIRATION
This premium Chateauneuf-du-Pape will be a treat with Moroccan Tagine, Hamburgers, Lamb chops and all variety of dark meats. It also handles spices very well.
VINTAGE AND WINEMAKING
A superb vintage, the best of the decade barring the faultless 2016, the growing season was perfect for gently ripening all manner of grapes. As there are 13 varieties in this wine, a solid ripening year was essential for excellence. There was a snap of hot weather at the end of July but the good and plentiful water and minerals at the vineyard saved the vines from serious stress. Harvest commenced in mid September.
A blend of the 13 grape varieties of the appellation, predominantly Grenache.
PRODUCER NOTES
A family run estate now entering its seventh generation, brothers Daniel and Frédéric Coulon oversee the operation at Domaine de Beaurenard. An organic, and biodynamic winery the family relies on natural remedies to entice the finest expressions from the vine and their farming is guided by the lunar cycles. At key moments in the vines life-cycle, they apply biodynamic preparations that strengthen the vines’s natural defences. To further fortify them, plant-tea sprays (nettle, horsetail and camomile) are regularly dispensed. In the vineyards, these methods involve working the soil without herbicides, spreading manure, and maintaining sensible grass cover.
