Somm Picks

OVERVIEW

One of the foremost Cru Bourgeois Bordeaux wines, ready for drinking today, from the star producer in Moulis-en-Médoc along with Chasse-Spleen; Château Poujeaux.

The 2013 vintage was very tricky with picking conditions threatening the vintage but Château Poujeaux have managed to produce a delicious wine that's drinking well today and will continue to drink well over the next 2-3 years.

CRITIC REVIEWS

Ripe, juicy blackberry – sweet and modern and attractive. Just a touch of oak on the palate, well-balanced body and higher than expected tannins, especially on the finish. 16+ Points. Jancis Robinson (March 2013)

FOOD PAIRING INSPIRATION

This wine would pair well with a Sunday roast, lamb or beef.

VINTAGE AND WINEMAKING

An average vintage that is ripe for drinking today. Spring 2013 was rainy and produced a late flowering. The warm summer months helped ripen the grapes. through rot was a constant threat.

PRODUCER NOTES

Producing wines of Grand Cru Classé quality but at half the price, Poujeaux is one of Bordeaux's best kept secrets despite being able to trace its history back to the 16th century.

Chateau Poujeaux's 52-hectare estate is located in a single plot on a well-sited gravel ridge just outside the village of Poujeaux in the AOC of Moulis-en-Médoc. The wine is typically a Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (50%), Merlot (40%), Cabernet Franc (5%) and Petit Verdot (5%).

The wines of Chateau Poujeaux are deeply coloured, richly perfumed with concentated cassis on the palate which leads them to being mistaken as a wine from Pauillac and one one famous occasion, was mistaken for Chateau Lafite with the 1953 vintage by Baron Rothschild.
