2023 Rosé, Château Peyrassol, Côtes de Provence, France

Somm Picks

OVERVIEW

From the oldest grapes on the estate comes the Château Peyrassol Rosé bottling, a firm favourite with fans and critics year on year from a blend of 6 grapes; Cinsault, Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Tibouren, Vermentino, Ugni blanc. This pale Provence Rosé is a hit throughout the entire year.

This is a domaine wine, not to be confused with the more readily available 'Réserve des Templiers', this if the Château's flagship Rosé from this, one of the oldest estates in Provence, founded by members of the Knights Templar.

Peyrassol are world renowned for producing some of the very best Rosé wines in the world including the 1204 bottling, a nod to their founding year made in tiny quantities and Le Clos.

CRITICS REVIEWS

Translucent orange. White peach, strawberry, mango and a touch of honey on the highly fragrant nose. Offers fleshy red berry and pith fruit flavors, along with hints of lavender, fennel and orange zest. Closes long, smooth and gently spicy, with the peach and floral notes repeating. 92 Points. FOOD PAIRING INSPIRATION

This rosé pairs really well with smoked dishes, fish dishes and Thai food.

VINTAGE AND WINEMAKING

2021 was a tricky vintage in France with many regions suffering late spring frosts where temperatures dipped as low as -9°C. Luckily Peyrassol escaped the worst of the frosts. In mid-August the fire of Le Luc swept through the local area but again, Peyrassol was spared. A September hailstorm caused total wipeout of the crop a few miles away at Pignan and yet in the end Peyrassol avoided frost, wind and fire to bring the ripe grapes in safely and the quality was exceptional.

Harvested at the night, the grapes are destemmed and vinified by direct pressing. Fermentation and maturation takes place in stainless steel and the wine is lightly racked. The blend in 2021 was made up of Cinsault, Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Tibouren, Vermentino and Ugni blanc.

PRODUCER NOTES

Château Peyrassol is one of the finest exponents of the Rosé style anywhere in the world. Consistently ranked as one of the premier producers in Provence, this ancient vineyard site has been producing wine now for over 800 years. Founded by members of the Knights Templar and in constant use throughout the centuries, Peyrassol is a French icon.

Château Peyrassol sits in the foothills of the massif des Maures, 10 miles from the Mediterranean Sea between Cannes and Marseille and has 95 hectares planted to vineyards cultivated on dry, rocky clay and limestone soils. At the core of the brand remains the Commanderie and all that it stands for: in addition to excellent wine, the estate is a historic sanctuary for gathering travellers and an enduring pillar of hospitality and conviviality.
