OVERVIEW
Long, textured and full of citrus, the Yarra Yering 2018 Chardonnay is a fine example of what this grape can do in Australia without being overly bombastic. Packed full of fruit, great freshness and length; a lesson in delicious.
CRITIC REVIEWS
While Yarra Yering makes its mark as a red wine producer of excellence, of late its chardonnay is really standing out. It's changing. It's finer. It's pristine, with layers of citrus and tangy acidity lengthening out a palate that's seamless and textural. It has the right amount of moreish sulphides to the fruit weight. Try putting this down. 96 Points James Halliday
Grey silty loam at 140 m. Unknown clone plus 95 and 548 – all unirrigated. Hand-picked fruit spent a night in the chiller before whole-bunch pressing and 24 hours' settling. Fermented in puncheons and barriques (30% new oak). Mix of ambient and cultured yeast ('TXL to add freshness'). 15% fermented in ceramic egg with 100% malo but malo was suppressed for the rest. Aged for 10 months. Winemaker Sarah has been freshening up the Chardonnay here.
Quite a broad, emphatic nose. Then a mix of green fruit and some leafiness with quite marked acidity. Very youthful and not nearly settled down – so much so that it's quite difficult to read at the moment. It's obviously been made with a lot of ambition. 16+ Points. Jancisrobinson.com
FOOD PAIRING INSPIRATION
This 100% Australian Chardonnay will pair well with a range of light meat and fish dishes. We especially favour chicken escalopes.
VINTAGE AND WINEMAKING
A cool wet winter followed by a stunner of a summer meant slightly lower yields that ripened to a tee. The Chardonnay grapes were the standout of the growing season.
Hand harvested, whole bunch pressed grapes that gave top quality juice in this vintage. The must is given 24 hours to settle before being transferred into 228L French barrique with 30% new oak. Matured for 10 months.
PRODUCER NOTES
The philosophy of the winemaking at Yarra Yering is to do all the hard work in the vineyard so less effort is needed in the winery. The quality of fruit is of paramount important. The grapes are hand picked and whole bunch fermentation is a favoured practise.
Winemaker, Sarah Crowe.
