2021 Chablis Domaine Sainte Claire, Jean-Marc Brocard, Burgundy, France
OVERVIEW
After frosts and challenges throughout the Chablis vintage of 2021, the final proof of quality is, as they say, in the pudding, and the pudding in 2021 is delicious, small; but delicious!
The 2021 vintage was one for skilled vignerons, a club for which Jean-Marc Brocard and his son Julien would surely qualify. This luscious, aromatically pronounced, rich and full bodied Chablis is a Premier Cru in all but name showing, once again, the incredible value in Chablis.
CRITIC REVIEWS
Sourced from low-yielding old vines (planted after World War II), this smoky, chalk-edged white highlights the classic mineral inflections of Chablis against luscious lemon and pear flavors of this ripe vintage. Full bodied and richly textured but anchored by a steely edge of acidity, it's ready now but should drink well through 2030 at least. 92 Points. Wine Enthusiast
Some of the vines here are over 70 years old. Even with a reticent, understated nose one can sense the energy and precision in this wine. There’s a lovely, creamy texture on the palate, with bright citrus notes and a long, lingering, savoury, mineral finish. A very fine example of Chablis which would compete very effectively against many a premier cru. 93 Points. Decanter
FOOD PAIRING INSPIRATION
This superb Chablis from Jean-Marc Brocard will pair well with scallops, lobster and poulet de Bresse.
VINTAGE AND WINEMAKING
The images of frost encrusted vineyards in March and April 2021 swirled around social media and many wondered if the entre vintage would be lost. The frost did clear, but the challenges for 2021 didn't end there. The shock of the March and April -6°C temperatures meant the vines were slow to recover and didn't really start to move again until June thanks to a cool May. Fortunately the hot summer allowed the remaining grapes to ripen and the quality of the remaining bunches was very high.
The Sainte Claire Chablis expresses with a great deal of finesse the typicity of its Chablis soil: the Kimmeridgian. Made from Chardonnay grapes, this vintage expresses the singularity of the wines through its strength, precision and freshness.
PRODUCER NOTES
The domaine of Jean-Marc Brocard was started with just a hectare of vines from his father-in-law, Emile Petit in 1973. Originally from the Côte d'Or, Brocard is an agricultural engineer by trade and only moved into wine upon marrying Claudine (she of the father with the vines).
That 1 hectare, over 40 years, has now become 180 as, vintage over vintage, Broacard has become one of the revolutionaries of Chablis introducing quality in winemaking and in the vineyard from Petite to Grand Cru bottlings.
In the last decade, Jean-Marc has handed over day-to-day control of the vineyards and business to his son Julien, who has taken the brand onto the next stage of quality gaining organic certification and trialling biodynamic viticulture in the Boissonneuse vineyard.
