Cult Wine

OVERVIEW

Even if the genio di Neive is no longer with us, his legacy lives on through his winemaker daughter and in the vintages he left behind. The unmistakable Barolo Falletto is one of the most recognisable wines in the world from label to glass and Giacosa's white and red label (riserva) wines are some of the most sought after on the local and international market. Dense, brooding, powerful and tannic, this classical 2017 Falletto should be held until at least 2025 before popping the cork.

CRITIC REVIEWS

This is broad and open-knit, offering plum, cherry, eucalyptus, juniper, licorice, tar and tobacco flavors. Dense tannins add grip as this turns more compact on the finish. The smooth texture and balance bode well for the future. 94 Points. Wine Spectator

Sweet berries, smoke, cedar and olives on the nose. Floral. Full-bodied with firm, chewy tannins and a pretty background and ripe fruit. Flavorful finish. Hints of bitter citrus and smoke, too. Very complex. Powerful for Falletto. Drink after 2026. 97 Points. James Suckling

FOOD PAIRING INSPIRATION

A bold, luscious, complex and powerful Barolo with acres of structure, this Barolo will pair well with big meat dishes like steak, veal, osso buco, venison and any beef or game dish.

VINTAGE AND WINEMAKING

2017 was a vintage of extremes with plenty of rain, heat and challenging growing conditions. The yields were as low as they have been since 1947, however this didn't stop wines of exceptional quality being produced. The winter was mild but a spring frost lowered yields across much of Europe. The heat came in May and stayed for many months, the grapes were picked in the first week of October.

PRODUCER NOTES

The Giacosa estate comprises around 20 hectares of vineyards, producing 400,000 bottles per year. Whilst all the wines are highly sought, the red label riservas, made in exceptional vintages only carry extra cache.

The oenological philosophy of Giacosa has been described as "updated traditional" placing him between the once waring factions of avant garde and traditional winemaking that once dominated the scene in Barolo.

French botti, rather than traditional Slovenian, are used during the long maturation process.
