OVERVIEW
The critically acclaimed vintage of the decade, a Barolo from 2016 from almost any reputable producer is going to be sublime but in the hands of Aldo Conterno, the second son of Barolo giant, Giacomo Conterno, here's a Barolo that sold out en primeur super fast.
This classic from Aldo Conterno manages to be fresh and supple in youth but is also guaranteed to improve over the next 20 years. A really special wine in very limited supply.
CRITIC REVIEWS
A fresh and elegant red, showing aromas and flavors of cut hay, strawberry, cherry, iron, eucalyptus and tar. Lithe and intense, with a long, savory aftertaste. Best from 2024 through 2045. 95 Points. Wine Spectator
FOOD PAIRING INSPIRATION
A bold wine with structure, this Barolo will pair well with big meat dishes like steak, veal, osso buco, venison and any beef or game dish.
VINTAGE AND WINEMAKING
2016 is considered the vintage of the decade and one of the finest of the last 50 years. It was impossible to make a bad wine in 2016, a vintage that avoided hail, snow, excess rain, wind or heatwave. The perfect vintage.
The Barolo Bussia comes from Conterno's best vineyards in Bussia Soprano. These epic five hectares are spread across three separate parcels with the average vine age around 40 years with no vines younger than 20 years old.
The vines are manually harvested, with the must staying in contact with the skins for 20-30 days then transferred to spend three years maturing in Slavonian oak.
PRODUCER NOTES
The history of this winemaking family dates to at least 1770. The Poderi Aldo Conterno is located in Monforte d'Alba. Brothers Aldo and Giovanni Conterno continued to work the family's vineyards until 1969, when they agreed to split their holdings and Aldo bought Il Favot after a brief stint in Napa learning from the Californians.
Aldo took on their vines in the Bussia area, and with it, the freedom to produce wines in his own style, greatly influenced by near neighbour Angelo Gaja and his modern winemaking techniques. His three grown sons Stefano, Franco and Giacomo carry on the tradition after Aldo passed away in 2012.
