OVERVIEW
From an excellent vintage, the ever popular Agincourt from Yarra Yering rarely fails to please and the 2016 vintage is no different. This Cabernet dominated blend, with a fair glug of Malbec is simply delicious with a juicy, high quality steak. In 2023, the Agincourt is probably hitting the very peak of its powers and should be bought and consumed right away.
CRITIC REVIEWS
Cabernet sauvignon 80% Malbec 20%. Agincourt Cabernet consistently exhibits classic cabernet characters of cassis and dark berry fruits, along with a unique leafy herbaceousness. The Malbec plays its part with inky robust plum and black cherry and ample tannins to provide beautifully balanced structure. 96 Points. James Halliday
FOOD PAIRING INSPIRATION
This 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Malbec is perhaps the most ideal wine for steak and beef you're ever likely to find. Pair with a delicious chateaubriand.
VINTAGE AND WINEMAKING
Hand harvested, crushed and destemmed into the half-tonne open fermenters. Hand plunged twice daily with some extended time on skins to soften the Cabernet tannins. Basket pressing and malolactic fermentation in French Bordeaux all 2 year old shaped barrels for 18 months.
Fruit was sourced from the Agincourt block of Cabernet sauvignon planted in 1995 and Malbec planted in 1990. The Agincourt block is located at the eastern end of the vineyard and is one of the more sheltered sites. This Cabernet clone is distinctly different to the No1 clone being more aromatic and lifted.
PRODUCER NOTES
The philosophy of the winemaking at Yarra Yering is to do all the hard work in the vineyard so less effort is needed in the winery. The quality of fruit is of paramount important. The grapes are hand picked and whole bunch fermentation is a favoured practise.
Winemaker, Sarah Crowe.
