OVERVIEW
One of the world's most recognisable wines and the best value Cabernet Sauvignon at this price point from California.
The Estate bottlings from the Monte Bello vineyards in the Santa Cruz Mountains are great value for money offering a delicious hit of ripe Cabernet Sauvignon from this amazing terroir from 65 year old vines. These wines are delicious today but also offer an evolutionary wine story that will beguile over the next 10-18 years.
CRITIC REVIEWS
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate comes from the estate Monte Bello Vineyard on the eastern side of the Santa Cruz Mountains and is 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot. Hitting 13.8% alcohol, its deep ruby/purple color is followed by a brilliant perfume of blue fruits, scorched earth, tobacco leaf, and lead pencil. Beautifully balanced and medium to full-bodied, with building tannins.. 94 Points. Jeb Dunnuck
FOOD PAIRING INSPIRATION
From an amazing vintage, this rich, bold Cabernet Sauvignon will pair well with grilled meats, sausages and meat sauces - outstanding with rack of lamb, maybe thanks to that 20% merlot.
VINTAGE AND WINEMAKING
A vintage of higher rainfall and a warmer end of the vintage than 2019. The Ridge Cabernet and Monte Bello are quite marked by late-season heat around Labor Day that pushed ripeness at the end of the year.
88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 1% Petit Verdot
PRODUCER NOTES
Quite simply some of the most sought after wines in the world competing in quality with the very best of Bordeaux in their reds and the finest Grand Cru Burgundies with their whites. Many of the wines come from old vines and are exceptionally concentrated benefitting from being delicious in youth and also age-worthy developing delicious tertiary characteristics over their evolution.
The 1976 Judgement of Paris tasting catapulted Ridge into the spotlight and instant international acclaim and their wines grew in reputation (and price!) over the ensuing years. However, there has been little change at Ridge itself.
Ridge and Paul Draper have always concentrated on extracting the maximum potential from their vines looking for flavour and concentration in the vineyard with minimal intervention in the winery. Their range of Bordeaux blends and Chardonnays from Monte Bello's fine terroir plus the Zinfandels from the Lytton Springs and Geyserville vineyards in Sonoma County, are among some of the best wines in the world.
