2017 Pelago, Umani Ronchi, Le Marche, Italy

Cult Wine

OVERVIEW

An award winning Le Marche/Bordeaux blend, the highly regarded Pelago from Le Marche's most decorated producer, Umani Ronchi, is a blend of 50% Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot.

This mash-up of grapes and regions shouldn't work, but it absolutely does and in its very best vintages creates a wine of depth, length and longevity with the ability to mature over the coming two decades. A great wine for the price and one any Italian wine lover should have in the collection.

CRITIC REVIEWS

This wine is now celebrating its 22nd harvest. The Umani Ronchi 2016 Pelago is a blend of Montepulciano, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot aged in French oak for 14 months. This is a wine with a deep core of dark fruit and a lot of stuffing that adds textural fiber and richness. Pelago shows a downright contemporary style that is expressed in terms of volume, softness and phenolic weight (or sheer grape concentration). This is a super Marche wine from start to finish, with black cherry, blackberry, soft spice, leather and tar. The 2016 vintage is especially rich and important. When you're ready to open it, sample it with wedges of an aged goat-milk caciotta. 94 Points. Monica Larner

There’s a very attractive, sea-urchin-like freshness to the blackberries here, both on the nose and palate. Medium-bodied with a fairly straightforward, lightly firm palate. But it’s that delicate fruit and mineral complexity that marks this out as outstanding. Enjoy now. 92 Points James Suckling

FOOD PAIRING INSPIRATION

Packed full of dark fruit and concentration, this wine needs some serious food to stand up to it. Will pair well with game, beef and hard cheeses.

VINTAGE AND WINEMAKING

An excellent vintage, 2017 produced some long hang times and decent yields thanks to steady ripening weather.  The grapes were picked by hand, starting in September with the Merlot, then the Cabernet Sauvignon at the end of the month, and finally the Montepulciano in October.

The grapes are fermented and undergo malolactic in steel tanks and are then transferred to 225 litre oak barrels for ageing for 14 months. The wine undergoes another year of bottle age before release.

PRODUCER NOTES

With 210 hectares of vines across Le Marche and Abruzzo, Umani Ronchi is hugely popular in Italy thanks to their range of wines made from both international varieties and indigenousness grapes  Umani Ronchi has doubled its estate and replanted 85% of its old vines since the Seventies and invested in local grapes like Verdicchio and Rosso Conero and recovered the Pecorino and Lacrima di Morro d’Alba varieties.

Umani Ronchi's production is both organic and vegan.
