OVERVIEW

When wine people wax lyrical about the value in the Languedoc-Roussillon you really need to look no further than the Domaine of the Bee 2017 bottling to see their point. This bombastic wine, made in a small production run, has impossibly high production costs and yet is available for an unbelievable price considering the sheer amount of pleasure it brings. Sensational value for money.

CRITIC REVIEWS

Black fruit, soft and juicy on the palate with effortless smoothness – this is a silver-tongued temptress! Succulent, balanced, classic. The equal of many Rhônes at much higher prices. . 17/20 Points Jancisrobinson.com

A blend of Carignan and Grenache, matured in a mix of 500L and 225L barrels, a quarter new, for 14 months. This is a big powerhouse wine with 15% abv and plenty of structure and depth, yet the nose is not without perfume, delicate rose and bergamot, spices and tobacco atop the black fruits. In the mouth a rich and substantial wine, the creamy-smooth tannins just edging the sumptuous, sweetly ripe black fruit. Plum-skins and cherry pits in the dry acidity add to the savoury character in a cracking wine – writ large 92 Points Tom Cannavan

FOOD PAIRING INSPIRATION

A serious wine that needs a big bold steak, a meaty BBQ or a selection of strong hard cheese.

VINTAGE AND WINEMAKING

A superb vintage that delivered both quantity and quality. There is a fruit forward and ripe quality about the wines of 2017.

All the grapes for the Domaine of the Bee bottling were hand harvested, and then hand-sorted at the winery to ensure only the healthiest and ripest grapes were chosen.

The Carignan is fermented in a stainless steel tank, except for 5 barrels-worth which was cold-macerated, as was all of the Grenache in upturned demi-muids (500L barrels) with the ends taken out, before being warmed up, inoculated with yeast, and gently punched down 2-3 times a day. After pressing, all of the wine was drained into a mixture of 500L and 225L barrels, approximately a quarter of which are new, and left to mature for 14 months.

PRODUCER NOTES

Founded in 2003 by three friends with a passion for wine, Domaine of the Bee is, amazingly, a side project for an MW (Justin Howard-Sneyd), his wife (Amanda Howard-Sneyd) and their accountant friend; Philippe Sacerdot. This trio manage to run a successful and iconic Languedoc winery whilst maintaining high flying city jobs in London. Truly living the dream then!

The vineyards are located close to Maury, home to the fortified vin doux naturel wines of the area. The area benefits from ancient vines of which Domaine of the Bee have three plots, one in La Coume de Roy planted with Grenache noir and Carignan with 100 year old vines. Another in Bac de Genievres with 100% Grenache Noir from 60 year old vines and La Roque, 100% Carignan from 80 year old vines.
