2017 Le Clos Vacqueyras, Domaine Montirius, Rhone, France

Somm Picks

If you're yet to discover Vacqueyras, the Southern Rhone AOC playing third fiddle to Chateauneuf-du-Pale and Gigondas, then you're missing out on some seriously impressive wines at a fraction of the cost of their better known, near neighbours. Domaine Montirius' Le Clos is a special highlight and in good vintages, like '15 and '16, can be truly outstanding and very good value for money. Biodynamic.

Included in my blind tasting of Vacqueyras and retasted (with an identical score) at the domaine, the 2015 Vacqueyras le Clos is a stunner. A 50-50 blend of Grenache and Syrah grown next to the winery on blue clay soils, it seems almost impervious to the effects of drought and heat. It's full-bodied and richly textured, but with no loss of detail and no sense of heat. Flowering garrigue makes a mark on the nose, followed by notions of apricots, raspberries and blackberries. The tannins are incredibly supple, the mouthfeel lush, the finish long and elegant. As I wrote in my notebook on one occasion, "This is the real deal" and "This is spectacular" (with "is" underlined) on the other, you might surmise I liked it, even without looking at the rating. 94 Points. The Wine Advocate (July 2021)

This top end Vacqueyras will pair amazingly with red meat stews and beef burgers.

An outstanding vintage, second only to 2016 in this decade.

Made from a 50/50 blend of Syrah and Grenache, the Les Clos cuvee is the prize possession of the Domaine and extreme care going into production in the vineyard and winery.

The grapes are harvested manually and 100% destemmed and left to ferment on natural yeasts. The wine is left to mature in concrete vats for two winters without any oak. No sulphites.

Considered the premier producer of Vacqueyras with the Le Clos cuvee regularly hailed as the best wine in the appellation. Montirius are proudly biodynamic throughout their 57 hectares and use as many natural processes in the vineyards as possible.
