2008 Rare Millésime Brut, Champagne, France
Rare Millésime Brut, so called because it's only produced in the most exceptional vintages, is the premium project of prestige Champagne house; Piper Heidsieck.
The Rare 2008 is only the 11th vintage made and an ultra special Champagne surpassing in its evolution, in our opinion, the likes of Dom Perignon and Krug in the same vintage. This wine will continue to improve over the next 15 years.
Like a stallion out of the gate, this shows an initial explosion of power, in the form of mouthwatering flavors and fine texture, before quickly settling into an elegant gait. The racy acidity is seamlessly knit, buoying the lacy mousse and flavors of cassis, toasted brioche and tangerine, with accents of candied ginger, hazelnut and fleur de sel lingering on the long, creamy finish. Drink now through 2035. 97 Points. Wine Spectator
Rare Champagne boasts an illustrious past, with its first vintage having been presented to Marie Antoinette in 1785. The wine is produced in very limited quantities and is restricted to exceptional years, with only 11 vintages being declared over the past four decades of production. 70% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Noir from selected grand cru vineyards. Simon Field MW: Gentle bead, lovely evolved notes of hazelnut, even a hint of praline, enrobed and ennobled by firm acidity and a persuasive finish. Alan Bednarski: Great, pure wine with still-fresh zesty flavours, delicate palate and sweet yeast notes, with a long flavourful finish of ripe melon. Tim Hall: A challenging, pressing start, wanting to overwhelm with shimmering and sharp attack, but shows intensity on the palate to match. Lovely lemon-apple notes and tempered texture. 96 Points. FOOD PAIRING INSPIRATION
This is such a fine Champagne we're not really sure we'd use it as an accompaniment to any meal. It's a celebration wine for Christmas or a special birthday or anniversary, however, it can deliciously support scallops or any white fish dish.
VINTAGE AND WINEMAKING
Considered the vintage of the century so far, 2008 was fairly mild but wet throughout winter and a rather damp and overcast spring followed. However, the summer improved markedly and the warm weather continued right though until harvest resulting in the most perfectly ripe grapes seen in the region in living memory.
Made with 70% Chardonnay and 30% Pinot Noir, this special Champagne is aged for 10 years on the lees and was disgorged in November 219.
Since the 1960's Piper Heidsieck have been bottling Champagnes from extraordinary vintages but it was only in September 2018 and with this vintage that the name was changed to Rare. Previous Piper-Heidsieck Cellar Master Régis Camus has subsequently assumed the new role of Cellar Master for Rare Champagne.
