Do I need a handle for my wine fridge?
One of the most common questions we get asked when our customers purchase a wine fridge is whether they actually need to fit or buy a handle for the fridge.
It may at first appear insignificant, but regardless one of the decisions you'll face when buying any wine fridge is whether to opt for a model with a handle or a handle-less design. This choice, while seemingly minor, can significantly impact the functionality, aesthetics, and convenience of your wine storage solution
Most of our wine fridges either come with or without a handle but some of our wine fridges, notably Swisscave, come without a handle which can be added in a variety of colours and is available to purchase as an add on.
Many more of our wine fridges, like mQuvee or Avintage and even La Sommeliere and Liebherr wine fridges often come with recessed handles (a part of the door is cut away in a hand shaped space) to create an attractive, seamless look.
Other brands offer the standard 32cm handle fittings which is a universal appliance size allowing the customer to replace the handle if they wish.
Dunavox offer Push2Open technology, along with some other brands, where pressing on the top left hand corner of the fridge opens it. Dunavox also often supply their undercounter wine fridges with two handles, one in black and one in stainless.
It's clear that there are multiple options for handles on wine fridges, regardless of whether they are wine cabinets, integrated, built-in or freestanding wine fridges but assuming the model you've chosen offers a choice, today we're going to look into the benefits of handle vs handle-less wine fridges.
Handle Wine Fridges
Pros
-
Ease of Use Handles provide a straightforward way to open the fridge. The tactile feedback from a handle makes it easy to grip and pull, especially if you frequently access your wine fridge. This can be particularly useful for those with limited hand strength or dexterity issues.
-
Classic Aesthetic Traditional wine fridges often feature handles, giving them a timeless and classic look. This can complement various kitchen or bar decor styles, especially if you have other appliances with handles.
-
Durability Handles are typically made from sturdy materials like stainless steel, which can withstand frequent use without showing signs of wear. This durability can contribute to the longevity of your wine fridge.
-
Fingerprint Resistance Many handles are designed to resist fingerprints and smudges, maintaining a clean appearance with minimal maintenance.
Cons
-
Space Considerations Handles protrude from the fridge door, which can be a disadvantage in tight spaces. If your wine fridge is in a narrow hallway or a small kitchen, the handle could become an obstruction.
-
Potential for Damage Handles can be accidentally damaged or become loose over time, especially if they are frequently used or if the fridge is located in a high-traffic area.
-
Design Limitations The presence of a handle may limit the placement of the fridge. For example, it might not fit flush with cabinetry or under a counter, affecting the overall design and flow of your space.
Handle-less Wine Fridges
Pros
-
Sleek and Modern Look Handle-less wine fridges offer a minimalist and streamlined appearance that can enhance the aesthetic of a contemporary kitchen or bar area. They blend seamlessly with modern decor and other handle-less appliances.
-
Space Efficiency Without a protruding handle, handle-less fridges can be more space-efficient. This design allows for a flush installation with surrounding cabinetry, making it a great option for smaller spaces or for creating a clean, cohesive look.
-
Reduced Risk of Damage With no handle to get caught on clothing or to bump into, there’s less risk of accidental damage. This can be particularly beneficial in busy households or compact spaces.
-
Innovative Opening Mechanisms Many handle-less fridges feature innovative opening mechanisms, such as push-to-open doors or recessed grips. These can add a touch of modern technology and convenience to your wine storage experience.
Cons
-
Ease of Use Handle-less fridges can sometimes be harder to open, especially if the door requires a firm push or pull. This can be a drawback for individuals with limited hand strength or for those who prefer a quick and easy access.
-
Maintenance Without a handle, the door surface is more prone to fingerprints and smudges, which can be more noticeable and require regular cleaning to maintain a pristine look.
-
Cost Handle-less designs, with their modern mechanisms and sleek appearance, can sometimes come at a higher price point compared to their handled counterparts. This can be a consideration for those on a budget.
-
Mechanical Issues Innovative opening mechanisms, like push-to-open doors, can be more prone to mechanical issues over time. If the mechanism fails, it can be more complex and costly to repair compared to a simple handle replacement.
Making the Choice: Factors to Consider
When deciding between a handle and a handle-less wine fridge, several factors should be taken into account:
-
Space and Layout Assess the available space and layout of your kitchen or bar area. If space is at a premium, a handle-less fridge might be the better choice to avoid obstructions and ensure a seamless fit.
-
Aesthetic Preferences Consider the overall aesthetic you want to achieve. If you prefer a modern, minimalist look, a handle-less fridge could be ideal. Conversely, if you have a more traditional style, a fridge with a handle might be more appropriate.
-
Frequency of Use Think about how often you access your wine fridge. If you frequently retrieve bottles, a handle can provide ease of use and quick access. If it’s more for occasional use, a handle-less design might suffice.
-
Budget Evaluate your budget. While both types of fridges come in a range of prices, handle-less models with advanced opening mechanisms might be on the higher end. Balancing cost with desired features will help narrow down your options.
-
User Needs Take into account the needs of all users. If someone in your household has limited hand strength or dexterity issues, a handled fridge might offer better accessibility.
Choosing between a handle and a handle-less wine fridge ultimately depends on your personal preferences, space constraints, and usage habits. Handles offer ease of use and a classic look but can take up more space and be prone to damage. Handle-less designs provide a sleek, modern appearance and save space but may be harder to open and maintain.
By carefully considering these pros and cons, you can select the wine fridge that best suits your lifestyle and enhances your wine storage experience. Whether you opt for the timeless appeal of a handled fridge or the contemporary elegance of a handle-less model, the key is to find a solution that keeps your wine at its best and complements your home’s style.
