2020 Sauvignon Blanc, Dog Point, Marlborough, New Zealand

Somm Picks

A stellar vintage with top quality fruit that Dog Point expertly managed to bring in at the right time despite the first wave of Covid lockdowns coming in at exactly harvest time. The Dog Point Sauvignon Blanc is a great wine any year, but the 2020 vintage really is superb, zesty, zippy, fresh and fruity and will drink beautifully until 2025 and a real testament to a talented team.

Powerful, precise and classic Dog Point Sauvignon: stylish and mineral nose of citrus and tropical fruit and an abundance of fresh herbs. All the attributes displayed in the bouquet come alive on the silky, fresh, salivating and fruity palate. A lively, refreshing example; well made, lengthy and tasty. 94 Points. Decanter

This has some youthful, flinty notes with lime peel and green passion fruit, as well as peach and wet stone. The palate is crisp, composed and quite nicely coiled into shape. Punchy and pure citrus and tropical flavours sit fresh. Drink now. Screw cap. 93 Points. James Suckling (Feb 2021)

Dog Point's 2020 Sauvignon Blanc boasts explosively pungent scents of boxwood, passion fruit and grapefruit. A bit more sedate on the medium-bodied palate, the flavours skew more toward pineapple and grapefruit with touches of fig and nectarine. This shows ample concentration, a silky mouthfeel, bright citrusy flavours and good length. In sum, it's a fine example of classic Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc91 Points. Wine Advocate

A certain stoniness on the nose, with less obvious struck-match character than the 2019 Sauvignon Blanc. Still very youthful and quite chewy on the finish. I'm pretty sure this will bloom into an even more interesting wine as 2021 progresses, gaining more fruit depth on the mid palate16.5 Points. Jancis Robinson (Feb 2021)

This 94 point Sauvignon Blanc from the iconic Marlborough area of New Zealand will pair fabulously with grilled fish, sushi, light or goats cheese salads and Thai food.

2020 will have to go down as the most surprising vintage of all time at Dog Point when a near perfect growing season with perfect fruit was interrupted by a nation wide lockdown that meant gathering in this amazing vintage would be a bigger effort than growing the season was.

Dog Point founder Ivan Sutherland kept a level head and ensured the winery stayed true to it's non-interventionalist founding principles even during the toughest of years. "With fantastic weather, clean and beautiful fruit, and good protocols, there was no reason not to hand pick", he says. “And we have been able to do it extremely efficiently, keep people employed, and stay true to our same quality levels.”

Famous for its Cloudy Bay imports, James Healy, the ex head winemaker at New Zealand's most famous winery; Cloudy Bay and Ivan Sutherland; former chief viticulturalist, Dog Point make many stylish, expressive wines at a slightly lower price point to Cloudy Bay but in many vintages of equal quality.

The three major grapes here are Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and the lesser renowned (in these parts) Chardonnay, although Dog Point would have Cloudy Bay beaten on the Chardonnay front. The Sauvignon Blanc is planted on the valley floor, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay mostly on the upper ridges.

The wines are staunchly and famously vegan having made that choice long before it was fashionable to do so. All the grapes are hand-picked, and, with the exception of the stainless steel made sauvignon, all wines are given a length of extended barrel ageing with minimal handling and rackling. Great believers in doing the majority of the 'work' in the vineyard rather than the winery, Dog Point's wines are natural and non-interventionalist.
