OVERVIEW

The Dog Point Sauvignon Blanc is a great wine any year, but the 2022 vintage really is superb, zesty, zippy, fresh and fruity and will drink beautifully until 2027 and a real testament to a talented team.

CRITIC REVIEWS

A complex, multi-dimensional and instantly appealing nose with aromas of limes, grapefruit, crushed sage and positive notes of gunflint and struck-match. An elegant, serious style – dry, taut, and vinous, with a pleasing texture, smokey greengage flavours, zesty acidity and a long, satisfying finish, 95 Points NZ Wine Rater

Powerful, precise and classic Dog Point Sauvignon: stylish and mineral nose of citrus and tropical fruit and an abundance of fresh herbs. All the attributes displayed in the bouquet come alive on the silky, fresh, salivating and fruity palate. A lively, refreshing example; well made, lengthy and tasty. 94 Points. Decanter

This has some youthful, flinty notes with lime peel and green passion fruit, as well as peach and wet stone. The palate is crisp, composed and quite nicely coiled into shape. Punchy and pure citrus and tropical flavours sit fresh. Drink now. Screw cap. 93 Points. James Suckling (Feb 2021)

FOOD PAIRING INSPIRATION

This 95 point Sauvignon Blanc from the iconic Marlborough area of New Zealand will pair fabulously with grilled fish, sushi, light or goats cheese salads and Thai food.

VINTAGE AND WINEMAKING

A mild spring after a wet winter in 2021 gave the vines a good start to growth. Budburst occurred around average timing from early September with only a few frost events occurring. Flowering was kind and produced what would have been a favourable yield. However, December and February brought significant rainfall (more than 200mm) to the usually dry period, giving the vines renewed vigour but unfortunately also increased the threat of disease. Hand dropping of diseased bunches was paramount to retain quality. This resulted in a smaller than expected harvest but one with ample classic fruit driven characters

PRODUCER NOTES

Famous for its Cloudy Bay imports, James Healy, the ex head winemaker at New Zealand's most famous winery; Cloudy Bay and Ivan Sutherland; former chief viticulturalist, Dog Point make many stylish, expressive wines at a slightly lower price point to Cloudy Bay but in many vintages of equal quality.

The three major grapes here are Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and the lesser renowned (in these parts) Chardonnay, although Dog Point would have Cloudy Bay beaten on the Chardonnay front. The Sauvignon Blanc is planted on the valley floor, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay mostly on the upper ridges.

The wines are staunchly and famously vegan having made that choice long before it was fashionable to do so. All the grapes are hand-picked, and, with the exception of the stainless steel made sauvignon, all wines are given a length of extended barrel ageing with minimal handling and rackling. Great believers in doing the majority of the 'work' in the vineyard rather than the winery, Dog Point's wines are natural and non-interventionalist.
