2019 Chardonnay, Dog Point, Marlborough, New Zealand
One of the very best New Zealand Chardonnay's from a great Marlborough vintage plus a super strong wine making team in the Healy and Sutherland families, once of Cloudy Bay. This full bodied, tropical yet tight and refreshing Chardonnay hits all the quality marks from attack to finish.
Fermented with indigenous yeasts and lovingly blended from hand-picked fruit, the wine is aged for 18 months in French oak casks. This most Burgundian of new world Chardonnays takes the techniques of batonnage and malolactic fermentation in barrel to lend creamy complexity. Enjoy from today until 2029.
Smoke, hay, dried mango, preserved lemon and buttered toast on the nose. Full-bodied. Tight. 95 Points. James Suckling
FOOD PAIRING INSPIRATION
This 95 point Chardonnay from the iconic Marlborough area of New Zealand will pair deliciously well with monkfish, prawns, seafood risotto or roasted chicken and turkey.
VINTAGE AND WINEMAKING
Another low yielding vintage in 2019 but the resultant exceptional high quality fruit makes the slightly higher prices worthwhile. Many Marlborough producers felt that 2019 was their best-ever vintage. The growing year was fairly uniform with plenty of sunshine and heat to ripen the grapes but not exceptionally hot and the wines are well balanced with the best expression being teased out of the trickiest of grapes.
Famous for its Cloudy Bay imports, James Healy, the ex head winemaker at New Zealand's most famous winery; Cloudy Bay and Ivan Sutherland; former chief viticulturalist there too, Dog Point make stylish, expressive wines at a slightly lower price point to Cloudy Bay but in many vintages of equal quality.
The three major grapes here are Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and the lesser renowned (in these parts) Chardonnay, although Dog Point would have Cloudy Bay beaten on the quality of their Chardonnay. The Sauvignon Blanc is planted on the valley floor, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay mostly on the upper ridges.
Dog Point are staunchly and famously vegan in production having made that choice long before it was fashionable to do so. All the grapes are hand-picked, and, with the exception of the stainless steel made Sauvignon, all wines are given a length of extended barrel ageing with minimal handling and rackling. Great believers in doing the majority of the 'work' in the vineyard rather than the winery, Dog Point's wines are non-interventionalist.
