Somm Picks

OVERVIEW

One of the world's great value wines from the most iconic Soave producer Pieropan; the architect of the modern Soave style. The 2021 vintage was declared as outstanding by the Soave consortium.

Bursting with citrus, honeysuckle and intense minerality, this wine is perfectly weighted in body and acidity and has surprising length, a serious Soave for the serious white drinker. 85% Garganega/15% Trebbiano.

CRITIC REVIEWS

Aromas of citrus, wet stone and a delicate whiff of hawthorn waft out of the glass. On the dry, delicious palate, bright acidity accompanies white peach, grapefruit and a saline note before finishing on a hint of white almond. It's an incredible value at this price point. 94 Points Wine Enthusiast

FOOD PAIRING INSPIRATION

Soaves generally go very well with lighter risottos like seafood or mushroom as well as seafood in general especially favoured are scallops. Try this wine with seared scallops.

VINTAGE AND WINEMAKING

A cool and wet spring slowed the first phenological phases of the vines and created a crucial reserve of water. During the summer, hot and sunny weather was punctuated by regular intervals of average rain. Thus, drought has been avoided and acidity levels have remained high. The vintage shows every sign of high quality, especially in the hillside vineyards.

The grapes were hand selected and taken immediately to the winery, where they were destemmed and crushed. Fermentation took place in glass-lined cement tanks of 60, 120 and180hl at 14-18°C. The wine then remained on its lees until bottling the in spring. The wine underwent a month of bottle ageing before release.

PRODUCER NOTES

The Pieropan family have been producing wines in the Veneto since the 1890s and were the first to bottle Soave under its name.  In the 1970s, Leonildo Pieropan tasked himself with what seemed an unlikely challenge at the time, to make one of Italy's finest white wines using a local grape variety, the native Garganega, rather than using 'noble' varieties like Chardonnay or Sauvignon.   He purchased the 'Calvarino' ('Little Calvary') vineyard in 1971, the name reflecting the steep, rocky volcanic soils, at 200-300m elevation.  Extremely hard to work, they also produce wonderful, age-worthy wines.  The limestone-rich La Rocca vineyard followed, dramatically set at the foot of the medieval La Rocca castle which dominates the town.
