2019 La Croix du Roy, Lucien Crochet, Sancerre, France
OVERVIEW
Lucien Crochet was one of the first wineries in the Loire to bottle their own Sancerre and sell it directly to the Parisiens of the 1950's. This enabled the estate to develop relationships with some of the finest restaurants in Paris. Today the estate is run by the son of Lucien, Lucien and his son, Gilles.
Lucien has introduced a modern wine making facility with the latest technology in temperature control. However, he has a non-interventionist approach to his winemaking and uses only indigenous yeasts as well careful selection of the grapes and long aging on the lees. The results are sophisticated and wines worthy of laying down for many years.
CRITIC REVIEWS
From several parcels planted on clay and chalk soils, this ripe wine is full of vibrant fruits. Apricot and green plum go with tangy citrus to give a textured wine that should age further. Drink from 2021. 93 Points. Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast (Dec 2020)
FOOD PAIRING INSPIRATION
This wine will pair well with roasted trout, mullet or soft goat's cheese.
VINTAGE AND WINEMAKING
The Loire Valley has been experiencing a run of excellent vintages and 2019 was no exception. Spring was dry and sunny and the producers did not have to contend with spring time frosts, which can severely hamper a vintage. The weather remained stable throughout the growing season with only the occasional hot day. This allowed the grapes to ripen and mature at their leisure. Producers were happy with the vintage and the wines are drinking well.
PRODUCER NOTES
Gilles Crochet left the Loire Valley to study oenology in Dijon. After finishing his studies, he worked with Domaine Dujac in Morey-Saint-Denis. There he learned to work with Pinot Noir, bringing this knowledge back to the Loire when he returned in 1983. He has continued to use the techniques he saw in Burgundy to experiment with various cuvees from each vintage.
His vineyards cover 35 hectares in total. 26 hectares are devoted to Sauvignon Blanc and the remaining 9 hectares to Pinot Noir. The plots are on east, south and west facing slopes and are roughly between 240 and 280 metres above sea level. The soils are calcareous clay and rock with Kimmeridgian subsoil.
